255/40 is the widest you can use on the stock wheels. You will probably get a lot of recommendations for Dunlop Direzza Z1 or Bridgestone RE-01R. Depends on your budget, and how much you drive your car. GL.

If you do daily driving.. and drive in the rain.... Direzza Z1 could be problematic..

I have Goodyear Eagle Response Edge... and they are really good DD tires that hold really well in the corners.. 50K mile warranty...

My buddy installs them and he said those and the Eagle F1 - all season were good too..

Just be picky about the balancing no matter what tire you get...

Direzzas actually got pretty good wet traction from what I've read. Still, who drives fast in the rain anyway?

Why would you want to add weight, offset your speedo, and lower mileage with an other than stock size tire?

Stick with 235/45/17s and get a good tire.

Are you serious? Many people do it as a nice upgrade. I currently run 255/40/17 on stock BBS SE rims. I'm running Falken Azenis RT-615's and I love them. I really couldn't be happier with the tire. The tread pattern is very aggressive and the car grips like no other. If you looked at my tires you would not be able to tell that they were not made for the car. I run 35 psi up front and 32 in the back. I've even taken some spirited corners in the rain without a problem. I woudn't take the tire through a floods because I bet they would hydroplane like crazy but they have impressed me over the stock Advans especially since I had them bought, mounted, and balanced for $568.

Wider on the street is not needed. You aren't even coming close to pushing a 235 to the limit. I'm not saying it won't work but I wouldn't call an up size on an 8" rim upgrading because you don't need the width or added weight.

I understand if you can get 255/40/17s cheaper than 235/45/17s but other than that theres really no reason to change tires size.
