I'm planning on getting RE-01R but 255/40/17 $221 and 245/45/17 $156 on tirerack.

A lot depends on demand. The most popular sizes are a little more expensive. It did't make sense to me when I first looked at it. It's all about the market. SUPPLY AND DEMAND. Manufacturers realize they have a hot ticket and jack the prices up. RE-O1R I've heard is a phenominal tire. I'm going to try Toyo's R1R.

Take a look at the Dunlop Direzza Z1 Star Spec. I believe that they were rated better for track use than the RE-01R's and are $161 from TireRack. I ordered them from Neal@TireRack Monday and recieved them Tuesday (thanks Neal) . I also had the choice of getting a $50 rebate or iPod Shuffle with the Dunlop's.

Search what Neal has posted recently. I think you'll find a thread on the RE-01R's vs. the Z1's.

BTW, the Z1's look kick-*** too!

Shorter sidewall ratio tires are usually more expensive, but this big of difference can be attributed to a demand issue like dieselmd is saying.

FWIW, I have the RE-01R in 245/45R17 on stock rims/suspension and it works perfect, it's not even close to rubbing, fits the tire fine, and drives great. This size is only 0.3" taller in diameter than stock size which is negligible.

I've really never understood the aversion to 245/45R17, unless you are lowered and worried about rubbing.

Wait for the RE-11. This will be a great tire and replace the RE-01R.

I don't think the OP can wait that long. Based on what I've read, the RE-11 will be released in Japan this summer, and here in the U.S. around early 2009.

I'll be getting these though once my RE-01R's run out.

I agree. I have 255/40/17s and they are awesome. I highly recommend these tires .

^^ For daily duties, you're OK w/ the Dunlop Z1's. Save yourself the $ and get the Dunlops in the size you want. 245/45 isn't the greatest size.

What are the reasons for that? Maybe you know something I don't, I just don't see how a tire that is only 0.3" taller in diameter vs the stock 235/45 size is that much of a detriment. Any gearing or speedometer disadvantages are neglible with that small of a number in my opinion.

245/45 is ideal for a 17x8 rim, and in addition to a slightly larger contact patch, it offers increased rim protection. Also, because the sidewalls on the RE-01R are very thick (definitely thicker than the Azenis RT-615), sidewall flex with the increased width over the stock size is not a huge issue.

Some 245s are taller than others. 245 Victoracers rubbed enough to cut the tire.

The taller sidewall will flex more, the tire will weigh more, and your instruments will be off. Nearly a half an inch taller is significant to me.

There's really no reason not to stick with a 235/45/17 for the street.

demand is the biggest reason for the huge price increase...that and if there is a bigger market for that size they tend to charge a bit more
