Tire Question

Whats a good tire to purchase in either 235/45/17 or 255/40/17 for the stock bbs rim. Im looking for something that will allow me to hit a really nice 60' but not be insanely expensive with somewhat decent tread wear and is it even worth getting a tire 2 sizes larger? thanks

Good question (not kidding). I never get tired reading about this

PS: 255 probably not worth for stock rims (except the looks). For 9x17 rims maybe.

245/35 will fit perfectly fine. If you want to go up a size or two, I suggest 245/45R17 or 255/40R17. Nothing bigger on the stock rim though. 255's are pushing it for a 8" wheel.

245/45/17 or 255/40/17s will work? and what is a good summer/all season tire to hit a 1.6 or better 60' foot a track?

Are these any good?

I just want to tell you, I just bought a 245/45/17 tires on 17x8 wheels and they rub. I am going to return them because I don't like the rubbing. I am going to change them to 245/40/17s. But 245/40/17 are a much bigger difference in terms of overal diameter from what you have at stock.

Don't do 245/45s - they are taller than stock and may not fit. You should stick with a 235/45-17, but the problem is there is no good tire that is good for launches, lasts a while, and is GOOD for the Evo.

- A tire that lasts a while (good treadwear) will be an all-season or weak summer tires
- A tire good for launches will have a soft sidewall, which is an all-season or weak summer tire
- A tire good for optimizing the Evo's best qualities - its handling and cornering - will not have good treadwear and will not be great for launching, because it will have stiff sidewalls

It's best to have 2 sets - one for inclement weather and dragging and one for daily driving and any autox/circuit use. This is only for people who don't really compete in anything, because that changes the equation altogether.

My setup is this:
- 285/30-18 slicks on 18X9.5 for autox and time trial competitions
- 235/45-17 Direzza Z1 Star Spec on stock BBS 17X8s for DD and non-competitive track days
- 235/45-17 Blizzaks on 17X8 Rota Torques for Winter

A 245/40/17 will be perfectly fine and will not rub. I wouldn't do a 255 on anything less than 8.5" wide.

I'll back WAR saying that some 245/45/17 tires are will rub holes in the splash guard and some will make contact with the fender when pushing the car.

Back to the topic at hand..... almost everyone I know has run their best short time on snow tires. I've seen multiple back to back 1.6s with Sumitomo HTR+ tires. They handle like complete crap but provide excellent 60fts and a nice soft ride.

A 245/40 should not rub, but I don't think anyone said it would, for it has less diameter than stock, but this also worsens the gear ratios.

We've been putting 255/40-17s on the stock rims for years now - no reason not to. It is the closest diameter to stock and sometimes is easier to find.

Same concept as what I was saying - the soft sidewall will crinkle and allow for a better launch than extreme summer tires. However, I don't consider it to be a "soft ride." My snow tires feel like *** when driving on dry pavement. I absolutely hate them except for when in snow.

245/40-17 does not rub at all, I have been running the 245/40-17 Star Specs on the factory SE wheels without any problem, enough said.
