Brake diagnosis...?

well, when i first took delivery of my car, it had about 20 miles on the odo...

the day i took delivery i noticed a ring around the center of the front drivers side rotor... looked like possible pad transfer...

so i took it back to service and they ordered new pads... i had the pads replaced and they had to resurface the rotors to get stuck portion of pad from the rotor...

so... everytime i brake i get a slight vibration in the wheel... but at high speed braking the shake becomes pretty violent... definitley not normal...

so i made an appointment for Tuesday to have it checked out...

do you think this is a problem with the pads or the rotors being warped...? should i demand new rotors and not resurfacing again...?

car only has 2700 miles on the clock...

Good evening Diesel,
The violent shudder would suggest rotor warping. Although some say this is a myth:

In all fairness, I've owned 2 different model Evos and have found the oem pad to be highly suspect. I had this problem with the VI and fitted some hard Hawk pads that cured the problem!

The stock pads are crap and are VERY prown to material to rotor transfer. Fit some DS2500 compound Ferodos.

the stock Brembo pads are that lame...?

i thought they were the strong part of the system, and the rotors were the weak link...

keep in mind i do not track this car... it's just for back road carving and commuting...

Both the rotors and the pads are not up to repeated Fast Road use. Top gear made a note of this on testing the fq300 vs the Sti... Vicki commented on the how the brakes "heat up and just seem to fade away..." while the STI was spot on.

I was doing some AYC testing a few weeks ago on a back road (NICEEE Tarmac Twisties ) and was greeted by tremendous loss of bite on entry into the penultimate corner.

For daily driving they are fine. Put some high performance pressure on them and you will see just how much they suck. There are countless threads over at the uk/european lancerregister site about this. Since I changed my car to the VII, i have not had a chance to import some Ferodo DS2500 or Pagid RS42 pads.

These pads are KNOWN to transfer pad material unevenly to the rotors!

all i know is that my breaks squeak like a lil bi*ch when they get warmed up, sometimes they squeal so loud it'll hurt my ears and i just perfer to roll though the stop signs and risk a ticket then listen to that anymore(of course i watch for traffic). The dealership says its normal and others say they had it and it went away. Well its been 2000 miles since it started and it won't go away. I'm gonna try some aftermarket break pads i guess. Any recommendations?

My squeaking went away at about 4000 miles ....it was replaced by the steering shuddering when I breaked lightly at speed...
I don't rate these "Brembos" at all....maybe this is why the europeans get rid of them quick for AP racing instead

...if people search, it seems that for other than hardcore track use, good pads take care of the problem.

I had similar issues, but since I thought it was the pads, I figured getting it taken care of under warranty would only stick me with another set of the same pads, ones that dust like crazy to boot. I ended up putting on a set of Carbotech Bobcats and have been very happy with them so far (500-600 miles I think). Good bite, low dust, and no vibration or pulsation as of yet. They are supposed to be rotor friendly too, though only time will tell on that (they look good so far though).

As for the specific symptoms/conditions I had, the vibration would come and go. It was sometimes quite bad when I got on them hard, other times they were fine. Usually, it was just a slight pulsation that I felt at light pedal pressures. With the exception of autocross, I really didn't do anything terribly hard on them except maybe stop & go commuting stuff (actually, that is probably worse than AX!). I did notice though, that generally, a good hard stop seemed to "clean" the rotors and smooth things out again for a while.

IMHO, the stock pads suck...
