need spring rate advice!
need spring rate advice!
well i didn't get any input from my last thread so i thought i'd change the title and try and again. my apologies if this is your second time around.
current setup:
Ohlins Road and Track
Front: Length - 8in, Rate - 450 lb/in or 203mm and 8.0 kg/mm
Rear: Length- 10in, Rate - 375 lb/in or 254mm and 6.7 kg/mm
issue:
I am on absolutely horrible roads with large dips and bumps making the ride extremely harsh and the tyres lose contact with the road at speeds over 50mph (often all four at a time, air!). I have a friend that runs the MR bilsteins and the ride and control on the road is so much better.
Most people that move from OEM struts to coilovers for better performance are probably on decent roads and don't really suffer a huge loss in daily driven comfort and performance like I do.
So my question is, can I ever achieve a ride like the Bilsteins with my Ohlins? If so what spring rates and lengths should I run? I would like to match the comfort and performance of the Bilstein HD and Swift GSR or Spec R setup.
Hope you guys can help.

Well when i built my set-up..i didnt fathom that i would be on roads so bad that im airborn @ 50MPH. So you may have to get the Coilovers re-valved to accomodate the conditions you encounter. I only say this because the shocks might not be able to be adjusted to handle such rough roads.
Plus another question would be what size wheel and tire you running....18/19 inch rims with little sidewall also makes the ride rough.

i have the results from the shock dyno when i got them rebuilt the other day. someone should be able to tell what the limits i have in terms of running a softer spring from the plot.

From the plots, those are really soft. Quite a bit too soft for those spring rates in my opinion.
Swap your 6.75k springs to the front and get a 5k spring for the rear. Even then you'll use the stiffer settings on the dampers. Then maybe get a rear sway bar.
You could go even softer, but depending on how much travel you have in the dampers you might just bottom out more.

do oem struts generaly have more travel than coilovers? would it make sense to run softer springs say 4.5K and 5.5K, with both a 10" length so i can increase the ride height some to allow for more travel or are 8" fine?
i am worried if the 10" would clear my 255 tyre in the front.
thanks for all the help.

, then i've tried them all. from full soft up to about 21 clicks in increments of 3.
