Wheel cupping info
Wheel cupping info
So I'm going back and forth with the dealership, they said my "wobble" sound was from a bad wheel bearing, when I came to get the bearing replaced they said the tire was cupped and the bearing was good. So, now I go to look at the tire and it looks fine, so I decide to swap the front to back and see how it rides. When I looked at the rear I noticed it was the one that is more jacked, on the outside tread the front of each groove is turned up. What does this mean? Do I need an alignment? Check the pics and let me know what you guys think. keep in mind, this tire is on the rear, but they guy before me might have rotated them.

Definitely get an alignment! Sounds like the guys at the dealership that I spoke to! LOL The factory alignment on the Evo is known to wear out the inside of the tires but shouldn't cause cupping. I got some camber bolts when I got a new set of tires and had a buddy that works at an alignment shop check everything out. I told him to set it up for maximum tire life. He said he put everything as straight up and true as possible. So far no unusual wear! Handling is still pretty good too but I don't autocross my car, just some spirited driving now and then!

Yeah Josh, I was just talking to a buddy of mine that works at the auto hobby shop on base and I'm setting up an appointment ASAP. The tires are in good shape besides the "cupping", I guess I'll have to get new tires and get her aligned and see what happens. I am still going to take it to Mitsu since its still under warranty and have them check all the ball joints, bushings and shocks.
generally speaking tire cupping is caused by far too low air pressure in the tires.
what kinds of pressures are you running? i have found that i need to go a good 3 - 5 psi above the recommendations on the door of the car depending on the tire.
for example, i used to like to run the OE yokos at 36 all around. anything less and i had issues with cupping.
and alignment couldn't hurt either, but you may be able to solve your problem much faster.

I run the press on the door jam, after talking with a mechanic I'm going to start with an alignment, and get new tires. I am going to just put it on jack stands for a while and get the wheels powder coated

So I went to the dealership today and they say everything looks fine besides the tires, so I'm going to get new tires and they are going to check the alignment. Avondale Mitsu has redeemed themselves today.
Just noticed the inside of my front tires are worn very bad... Will the warranty cover an alignment? I don't think it does? This sucks I can't afford new tires right now and I'm not going to put new ones on without an alignment check at least.
their just giving you hard time .... it wont affect alignment readings sensors mounted on the rim...but sometimes the car wont go straight with messed up tires after alignment..then they have to do alignment again and they dont get paid to do it twice
