Advice needed - 2 sets of 3 tires!

Hi all,

I have been unlucky with tires. In 2007, I decided to run a dedicated summer tire and bought some old rims and mounted some Hankook H405 for winter duty. My summers had Falken Azenis 615's.

This summer, I got a nail through the sidewall of the Azenis. I had to switch to the Hankooks in October. December, I notice my right front is low. Ends up being a nail about 1.5 from the sidewall! I get it patched hoping it will hold till summer but alas it is not holding.

So now I have 2 sets of rims with 3 good tires

I am debating on what to do. I think I have a line on a used azenis with similar tread wear but it is hard to justify $100 to buy and mount a used tire with 5-6/32's on it.

For winter, I am wondering if I can go with 2 used or 2 new tires. The Hankooks have 6/32's on them. I have always replaced all 4 on my AWD cars but this is a bit of a pinch. The winters just need to get me around in the cold temps and snow on occasion.

Any ideas?

Why not buy a real set of winter tires used. There is almost always someone selling them. But no matter what you need to stay within 2/32 on all tires. Otherwise your diffs will want to meet you face to face.

yeah, I wanted to do that but when I bought the hankooks, I had to have tires that weekend. So I was limited to the best local deal at the time. Now I am just trying to get the rest of the life out of the 3 that are left.

I will check the F/S thread.

I would sell the 3 good used tires on ebay and just buy a new set.

Really best not to mix/match designs and tread depths. Even short term that can cause diff issues and handling problems when bad weather hits. I'd also start fresh with a matched set all around.

in my opinion i would replace unevenly worn tire with another used one of the same make/model and similar tread depth in your situation. any ONE uneven tire also means your alignment is probably way off. having uneven wear on a set of tire is common with negative camber alot of evos run with these days.

or if you have the cash to burn, buy a full set lol!

Buy a replacement tire and have it shaved to the tread depth of the other 3. Tirerack offers this service for $25-35 per tire. That's strange that Neal didnt mention this option, now I wonder if they still offer the service.
