WTF happened to my caliper?

this week my evo has been making clunking noises in my right rear and starting yesterday the car was making a slight grinding noise- i thought it was the wheel bearing.

later last night whenever i braked I heard a GRIND when slowing down to a stop- i go home and the CALIPER is rubbing against the rotor! pads are not completely worn, butcaliper is wearing down into the rotor!
anyone see this before?

I've never seen that before. The calipers should never touch the rotors. I've worn brake pads completely thin until the "base plate" of the brake pad was grinding into the rotor but the caliper never touched the rotor.

Yeah - what he said.. lets see a picture. Jack the car up, take the tire off, and snap a few photos. If that is what's happening it'll be the first time I've ever seen it.

If the bolt came off that hold the caliper to the strut assemble broke or worked its way loose this can happen.

Wife's car in college, after a brake job, the caliper feel off and jammed into the wheel and reduced the wheel, caliper and rotor into a smoking ball of melted slag (that had to be towed and beat off with a sledge hammer).

Yep, what goofygrin^ said. Had that happen on my Supra before. Bolt holding the caliper came loose, causing it to rub against the rotor. DO NOT DRIVE the car again until you get this repaired. Hopefully no major damage has been done and that is your only problem.
