tire recommendation

my evo spun out and was declared total. after the port authority and geico did there investigation (they have footage of the incident) they said my my tires had 5% tread and was the cause of the control loss. i plan on getting another evo (8 or 9 more likley 9) and want some recommendations for some beefy tires for summer and winter, and possibly all seasons. im a noob to tires and will try not to make cost a problem since i lost my baby.

From: somewhere testing various tires, brakes, and suspensions.
All-seasons or two sets dedicated for seasonal use.

To be honest, not checking your tires is your fault. Part of car upkeep and safety.

But, options:

A/S: Goodyear Eagle F1 A/S, Kumho ASX, Yoko offerings
Summer: Dunlop Z1 Star Specs, Kumho XS, whatever the new B'stone will be
Winter: Lots of great winter tires out there

Get 2 sets of tires... all seasons are ok, but nothing keeps you on the road in the winter like dedicated snow tires.

Summers: Falken Azenis, BFG G-Force.... it depends on your bank account and the kind of punishment you want to inflict

Winters: Blizzaks, winterforces, pick one they are all better than the all seasons or summers in the junk

If it's in your budget I'd buy a set of summers and winters. This way you get the best of both worlds/seasons. For summer I'd look at the Dunlop Z1 for the top in dry traction and response. If you want a bit more life look to the Yokohama S-Drive. In the winter nothing more I'd recommend than the Bridgestone Blizzak. The B-Stone 960 A/S would be the top in all season if you decide on just one set.

+1 for getting dedicated summer and winter tires. It might cost you a bit more from the get go, but they'll last longer since they're seeing seasonal usage.

I bought a set of the Dunlop Z1 Star Specs and found that they have the worst radial pull of any tire I had ever purchased. I would drive down the road, take my hand off the wheel and within seconds the car would pull left or right. I was constantly having to fight the car. I had the car aligned 3 different times, rotated tires, checked air pressure and even check to see if I had a hanging caliper. It all checked out. I kept thinking what the crap! Finally a friend of mine said he had a new set of Bridgestone 01Rs already mounted sitting in his house. He suggested try them out. So, I put them on and headed out. I was completely shocked, the car did just as it suppose to. I took my hand off the wheel and straight as a ruler. I could count up to 25 seconds before ever having to touch the wheel. I ended up returning the tires to Dunlop through Tirerack and purchasing the 01Rs. I was really disappointed in the Dunlop. They had great ratings, reviews and price. I must have received a bad set or something.

Oh, one other note, the 01Rs....... I thought would pull the black off the pavement. They are very sticky.

If you are going to get All Season tires I would recommend the new Eagle GT over the Kumho ASXs. I have had both and the Eagle GTs corner much better and also handle better in the snow based on my experience.

You are correct. There are several threads on the Z1's. I posted to a couple of them to let folks know what I a had experience with the Z1's in case someone else has experience the same thing.

Suppose I could have just started a new thread.

i had the z1's and didnt notice the significant lateral pull as mentioned, but i was coming from using falken 615's, which i felt had more lateral pull.
the z1's are great on the track though, warm up so fast and super sticky for so long.
for summer tires, and for the price i'd probably go for z1's again.

$50 rebate on Dunlop Z1s

We've had 7 sets of Z1s with no issues. It's the best proven performing tire for an Evo.

$50 rebate on Dunlop Z1s until the end of March.
