Why are rt-615s so cheap?
...compared to other tires such as the re-11s or star specs. I priced the 255/40/17s and got anywhere from $133 a tire to $166 a tire and the re-11s are going for 230-266 at a local Firestone dealer.
Are they cheap because they have been around so long? Is their treadwear much worse than the Dunlops or Bridgestones? I think they are pretty similar in performance.
Thanks

Yeah they have the 245/45/7s for that price. I wonder what the performance diff is btw these and the Falken 255/40/17s. Ideas? But the price is incredible.

The rt-615s do not compare to those others in terms of performance. They are a great summer tire value, but they are not competitive vs those other tires when racing, which is fine for most.
I'm running 17x8.5 RPF1s for AUTO X w/ the stock 235/45/17 advans... i just got a new set of RE01Rs 245/45/17... if you are doing 17x8.5 or the stock 17x8 then 245/45/17 is what you want to get for better gearing etc... 245/40/17 will not work as good as the 245/45.
The price is great and shipping is fast... I dont even need tires for at least another month or so but for that price I had to get them... they are really good tires... 140 treadwear... so not too good for DD but good enough

The better question is why are the NT-05's so cheap. $50/tire cheaper than star specs for me. rt-615's suck (comparatively), that's why they are cheaper than the (overpriced) RE-11's.
The RT-615’s are ok for the money for a daily driver or if you just need tires to get you by. I had them on my S2000 and Evo when I didn’t have the money for anything better. I didn’t like the RT-615 at the limit, on both cars the tires would grip and slide grip and slide. They were fine if you wanted to drift the car through a corner or corner up 8/10th but at 9-10/10th they had a weird wiggle (maybe has something to do with the zigzag in the tire). My advice is if you can, spend a little more on the something like the NT-05’s and you will be in a whole other level in performance. I’d say you can corner the NT05’s at 7-8/10th and be faster than 10/10th on the RT-615’s. They also don’t wiggle at the limit.
I had the RT-615's on my Evo...I never tracked the car...good grip for the price and fun to drift a little. After a few thousand miles they were pretty crappy in the rain. I had the 255's they were like skis...didnt drive much over 65mph in the rain with them. All and all I did like them.
