Coil overs (What to go for)

So i done a lot of reading, i know about suspension and the importance of a proper setup. I have experience in setting up a car, fiddling with height, springrates, camber, toe-in/out, weighing a car for a proper setup but what i dont have is experience with what will do for my application. Usually the owner purchased some suspension set and i had to tune to it's best using trial and error as part of a hobby raceteam ( a 1968 Alfa Romeo and a Alfa Romeo 147 cup racer) and make due with was was available. I know i should go for a set like Intrax or Moton but i just dont have the money atm, and I also dont put that much milage on my EVO VIII that a 3000 euro set of coilovers is justified and neccesary in terms of amount of adjustability, reliability and duribality. I drive somewhere between 10.000 to 15.000 kilometers per year on tarmac and the occasional gravel paved road and aprox. 5-7 trackdays per year.

So Here's my dillema, will a cheaper set of coilovers do for my application and driving style. I dont need max performance, i Need a good level of reliability and adjustability without spending money on things i wont be using anyways. Wich brand of coilovers in the "cheaper" range will provide that. Enough quaility, a satisfactory level of "daily"driving and adjustability for the occasional trackday. Coilovers imo already improve over standard shock setup, but i want to avoid overdoing it. I can always switch to the expensive versions if i consistently go over the edge of a cheaper set.

I dont care about driving comfort, i did'nt buy a evo for it's comfort, i would have bought a Citroen C6 or old CX for comfort.

what i've come up with so far and whithin the budget i set for myself is:

Megan Racing Track EVO Coilover Kit, Cusco EVO 23mm Adj. Rear Sway Bar, Cusco EVO 25mm Front Sway Bar.

This imho as far as i can compare to what i know from experience (though none with setting up a EVO) is what minimal adjustability i would need to figure out a good setup by trial and error for the 3 situations i will be driving in: All wheather road set-up, Dry track & wet track setup.

I hope someone can shed some more light and hopefully understand what i 'm aiming for and give good pro & cons to this.

ty in advance

Alot of people have had issues with Megans. they are oversprung for the street, some have found them bouncy and there are complaints about reliability.

From what I have seen (do not have a VIII) KWs, Ohlins, and HKS are some of the better ones. KWs give you 3 way adjustment and have a lifetime warrenty. JICs are a little cheaper and some really like them but I have heard there are issues with customer service if you have problems but that might just be in the US.

Do it right and pay more upfront.
I would suggest you figure out exactly what you want and then contact several vendors on this site and get customized setup. Works, Robispec, Gtworx, and some others offer great coilovers and can re-valve them for your specific need.

you should consider adding coilovers as part of a system of upgrades for your suspension. This like bushings, roll center kits, spring rates, sway bars, all have to be considered. that is why you should look at these vendors, they have experience with the evo and coilovers so you won't have to do all the guess work.

Any "good" coilover will have to be re-built depending on how hard you are with them, but cheapers coilovers will have problems with rebuilding. Judging by what you said, you're looking at a rebuild at 3 years or so.

Robispec has i believe custom valved Megans that fit your price range and he will be able to suggest sway bar options and other things for you. I suggest you contact him.
