McGard Lug Nut Key

Anyone else have their McGard lug nut key come apart on them? The key separated from the shank – Yes, I always torque my wheels with a torque wrench to spec.

McGard’s customer service is closed today (Had planned on changing my brake pads today). I’m guessing I can only get a replacement key from McGard. I do have the registration card and ID, but has anyone found other suppliers of replacement keys?

They are the only ones that have the codes to cut keys for their locks. Unfortunately you will probably have to wait till Monday.

Yeah, their website says Mon-Fri 8:00 - 5:00 . . . That's what I was afraid of. Thanks for the reply.

I had the insert fall out. I put the insert into a lug, then put the socket part onto the lug and banged it with a hammer.

Then I got 4 non-keyed lugs and threw the locking lugs away.

I tried tapping it in with a hammer and screwdriver, but it twists right back out. Think I'll buy two keys.

I had a similar problem with my car and my friend's 08 Lancer with McGard wheel locks. Your best bet is to go to any garage that deals with wheels and tires and have them use an impact wrench to remove the locks while using special "lock removers".

I have two sets of wheel lock removers that I have to have at work.

You would be surprised how fast locks can be removed/ Try pounding on a crappy socket that is one size smaller than the lug.

Thanks all for the replies. I've got some JB Weld and I'm going to give that a try first. If I can get the locks off, I've got an extra set of lug nuts from my Eclipse I'll put on until the new key arrives. If the JB doesn't work, I'll just wait for the new key from McGard. Just glad I wasn't stuck on the side of the road with a flat at 3 AM.

I took off the locks right after I got the car to avoid these problems. Would look at an alternate brand with improved quality, if available

Wheel locks are such a pain in the butt! I have worked for a mitsu dealer since 92 and have heard of one ONE person who had one wheel stolen! and they actaully had wheel locks so I guess they really didn't work that well!
