I'll save you a little time. The tires you have are hardy no-name el-cheapos; they're some of the best street tires available today. Have a look at C&D's most recent tire test for specifics, or search here. Good luck.

From testing I've seen, summer tires are generally better than all seasons in the wet. There was a summer, winter, all season tire comparison posted recently. Anyway the summer tires smoked the all seasons in the wet testing providing the temps stayed above 45-50 degrees. That was one of the surprise results of the test.

Some have mentioned that the hankook ventus tires that you have are summer max performance tires. They're not to be driven in temps approaching or below freezing. Definitely not snow. They will be great in a warm So Cal rainstorm though.

I'm lowered on 17x8.5 with 245x45x17 Nittos right now and they rub. Any 245x40x17 work fine.

Yes but what offset are your wheels? That is important. lower than 20 offset will probably rub. 245/45/17's are larger diameter than 255/40/17.

Check out this cool link for quick tire size calculations.
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

245/45 is exactly 1/2" larger diameter compared to stock size. 255/40 is .3 of an inch smaller diameter than stock.

I'm lowered on 17x9" wheels with 255/40/17 falken rt615's and they don't rub.
