Harbor Freight spring compressor on EVO 8?

Anyone ever use one of these on the front strut of an EVO 8?

SPRING COMPRESSOR

If not, other suggestions?

I know renting is an option, but given this thing's $40, and I have a 20% off coupon, it's probably cheaper.

Thanks, yeah I think I'll pick one up tomorrow. People rag on HF, and if I owned a front end shop I probably wouldn't get one, but for the few times I'll use it, it should be fine.

I have not used that one. But it looks like it will work. Just check all the bots and nuts on it before using it. I have found that some times they are loose.

I used the Harbor Freight one on my Eclipse and it worked fine. When the time comes I'll use it again on the Evo.

thats what I use. I get SOOOO nervous every time I use it though. I typically back the top strut nut out to the end of the threads before lifting the car in the air. That way it doesnt have to be compressed as much. And was pretty happy to find out I didnt need to compress my Spec Rs to re-assemble. It helps having big help..lol.

yeah, I've also used this cheaper one. I've had it a good 8-9 years and have swapped springs on a couple of cars without issue.

Thanks for the replies. I've replaced ball joints on typical upper and lower control arm vehicles where you use the car's weight and a floor jack to compress the spring (talk about freaky) but never a spring compressor. I'll go ahead with the HF tool. For the $$$, why not, right?

That first one you posted the link to is by far superior to the two individual ones you put on each side and have to tighten down one at a time. I have both before just recently investing in the hydraulic one. Honestly for $80 more I would go with http://www.harborfreight.com/hydraul...sor-45860.html or even the air compressor powered one (that's the one I have). I can swap a strut in about 30 seconds with it being off the car vs having to tighten down one side, then the other, or even using that tool above still takes a little bit of time. The progression is the standard two compressors method, then the one you posted, then the hydraulic one, and each being easier than the previous

autozone rents them out. I would be weary of the HF ones, i have had one of the two teeth break on me before. Just be careful.
