Is there a way to remove the front strut top nut without the special tools ??

I understand the strut shaft has to be held still while the nut is turned.

I do it with the car still on the ground. I have used a breaker-bar and a quick turn. If not a quick zap of an impact can do it, although, impacts can damage the valving if over done.

If the strut is off the car, use spring compressors and have a friend hold the strut (with it on the ground facing something not human/car) as you use the breaker-bar to turn it. Or do same with impact.

 

They are an absolute pain in the *** to get off without an impact gun. Although possible, its almost guaranteed your blood pressure will go up.

Break the nuts loose while still on the car,did mine with just socket wrench no problem.

 

So, the slotted top of the strut is NOT held while you turn the nut with the bar or
an impact wrench?

Do you guys torque the nut down when you do the install?

I wanted to do this to send the Bilsteins for revalving.

I highly suggest taking it to a shop/person with an impact gun

 

I hold the shaft with an adjustable wrench, then loosen the nut. Couldn't find a good way to torque it down, so I ended up using my best guess. Not something I like doing, but with the Bilstein's having a locking nut to begin with, I figured it should be ok.

Is this just to loosen the nut? I imagine a spring compressor is still needed to fully remove/disassemble everything.

 

Yes, just to loosen the nut. Don't remove the nut unless you've got the spring compressed.
