EBC Red brake squeal!@#$%^^

Hello-

So i installed a new set of slotted rotors & ebc rad pads.

The pads came with these stick on shims & from what i read, it said to only use their shims. I applied anti seize between the shim & pistons..

HOLY MOTHER OF GOD! Sometimes these pads squell so loud, i am certain dogs that are near-by are running around in circles & howling at the same time.....

Any suggestions???

There are ~90miles on them & I am following the ebc "urban driving for 200 miles" bed-in guidlines..... I dont know that i can wait that long....

I am 99.9% certain, the next bit of free time i have, I will be pulling the ebc shims, pads cleaned & the oem shims are going on with anti-seize...... This will be the same shim / anti seized used on my DS2500's that never made a peep.

Any help would be appreciated.

Aby,

A slew of possibilities.

1. Did you grease all of the other contact points? Like where the caliper springs touch the pads? Sometimes, a pad will drag and make noise.

2. Did you clean off the rotors of the old pad compound? I usually will use sand paper or steel wool to clean the rotors off.

3. What is the bedding procedure for the EBC like? For a typical aggressive pad, you will want to get as much heat in them as possible to bed them correctly. City drving usually doesn't do this well. You'd want to fidn some empty roads, do multiple (4-6) hard brakes from 60 to 20, back to back, without completely stopping the car. Then you'd want to drive a constant speed a few miles to cool the brakes, and repeat again a few more times, followed by the cooling step.

This is what I've done and never had brake squeel issues.

yes, anti seize applied to all contacts points. even referenced old pads that came out in case if i didnt think of all potential areas.

no / yes. no old brake compound, as rotors were new.

I followed the ebc recomendation, since they're the makers....... This morning on the way to work, i leaned on them hard x 3 & cooled them off into work.

I know EBC pads have that break-in coating on the pads. Have you worn that off yet? I wonder if that may cause your noise.

I've installed EBC on a friend's Ralliart, and not a peep from day 1. I disregarded EBC's direction, and used the procedure I mention in te previous post to bed them. Also, I use synthetic brake caliper grease instead of anti-seize. I dont think anti-seize has minimal lubricity if any, but that's just my opinion.

i have ebc red stuff pads.

i used the stock shims along with anti squeal.

they way i broke them in was 100mph then tap twice on the pad, followed by a hard break to stop. repeat then left overnight

no squeaks to date

Worked with Aby here.

Even on the EBCs. I do 50-60 miles of normal driving to seat everything. Then bed as follows:

60-20mph x 6 to 10 times. Burnishes the pads and transfers a thin layer of material to the rotors.
Coast home, try to avoid using the brakes as much as possible.
Rest 30mins to 1 hour.

Drive normal.

Zero noise on my Reds or Yellows. I do try installs without anti-noise grease.

But if I had a problem, I use the org/red anti-squeal adhesive found at the autoparts store. Put that on the backing plates and allow to tack. Reinstall. All to dry over night. Drive.

Last I had spoke with Aby on this, my bed-in technique above worked.

I questioned SmikeEvo about this after my red stuff install as well. I think it's the coating they use to deglaze the rotors because after a really serious break in procedure then about two weeks of regular driving the squeal went away. Just made a serious panic stop to keep from hitting this fuzzy little Pomeranian dog today from about 50 mph and boy did these pads work. The dog is unknowingly thankful I'm sure. Just be patient and I second the higher speed break in procedures somebody mentioned above. I think that helped cuz the repeated 60 to 20 stops didn't cause any noticeable decrease in sound.

Now I see that Aby's got it taken care of.

damn, wish i read this earlier. i've driven my car with the new ebc reds for almost 400 miles and they're still squealing, but I haven't braked hard. if i do the beding process now, will there be any drawbacks? (can't be worth that what it is now...they're so loud) haha

No. You should always bed new pads.

My rear brake squeal story (No thread jack=)

Went cheap & installed the Duralast Ceramics front & rear. Did not install the strange, but effective angled OEM shims.
Greased / Bedded-in / Re-greased / Shaved the rotors / changed the fluid & still the rear brake squeal (Very loud "Serious rear brake Squeal")

Ditched the Duralasts & installed the Stop Tech Street pads & installed the OEM angled shims w/ grease (On the advice from a fellow EVO owner)

Expensive lesson learned: Use the OEM Shims
Squeal gone & braking performance on the track day level

Update: a lot quieter but still squeal. Should I do it over again or just give it time?

Can get some red/orange anti-noise adhesive from the auto parts store and coat the back of the front pads.

Where the rotors new when the pads where installed?
