understeers on right handers only

Hi there,

At the track if I go into a slow / medium speed right corner (in 3rd gear and say a 90 or 180 deg corner) the car will push. It will point and turn in well but will then understeer / tramline quite badly. Chicanes are not an issue.

I can enter with less speed and of course it is less apparent but I have had a case with an evo in front of and behind me on the same right corner (all pretty much entering at the same speed) and I am the only one understeering off the track.

If I take the same type of left hander it will actually oversteer if I push it too fast.

The problem does not happen in a fast right corner eg 4th or 5th gear - it turns in well and takes a set.

Have a little toe out at the front and 0 toe at the rear.

Any ideas?? 1 dead shock???
Thanks in advance.

My friend was in the same situation with his Si, and it turned out to be exactly that, one bad shock.

Other then that it seems like a very weird problem.

I vote for a dragging caliper on one side, the outside one)

Tires and pressure, suspension, alignment, over driving the car, differentials, when applying power, when braking, and many other things all come into play here. So many variables.

Maybe list your alignment settings, suspension mods, and tires to start with. Then explain how you are driving the corner.

Just a thought, not in any way trying to bash or get onto you, just trying help you get your answer!

It can be a lot of things, first things first though. A 4 wheel alignment check is needed.

If the rear tires toe is set to 0, but not straight (makes the car slightly crabwalk) that could definitely be a major cause. Inconsistent caster or camber is also another possibility.

If neither of those help, cornerweights may be the culprit. If they are way off it will promote turning in one direction over the other.

I would only suspect shocks if it DOESNT occur mid corner. The suspension should be settled by then taking the shocks out of the equation. If its caused during corner entry, exit, or during throttle/brake transitions only then shocks valving differences or a bad one could be a cause.

Since the difference is so big left vs right I would assume alignment first until I know its not that.

Thanks for the replies.
I do my own alignments with a stringline and am pretty meticulous about it.
I had camber of 3.9 neg on front left and 3.5 neg on front right (track is mostly right handers),
2mm total toe out at the front.
Rear both 1.8 neg and 0mm toe.
Car steers dead straight...no pulling or crabwalking.
Has not been corner weighted. Tyre are a Bridgestone semi slick at 34 psi hot.
Is there an on car test to confirm a dead shock?
