Tie rod ends boot ripped.
Tie rod ends boot ripped.
Hi,
I have a 2003 evo 8,
I'm trying to remove my tranny out , in the process I use a tie rod separator and
it ripped both the tie rod ends rubber boot.
So my question is could I just marked the jam nut with a white out and replace
the tie rod ends with a regular lancer tie rod ends without getting a shop to do alignment on it?.

you might just be able to buy new boots. I got the lower ball joint boots for cheap from my dealer.
also consider firestone lifetime alignment. and use a ball joint separator in the future that uses a pressure screw. very small change of messing up the boots.
I've tried painting the adjustment when changing tie rod ends. But, I also have the homemade equipment to check toe. Toe was off even when I set it to my paint marks.
BTW, if I am going to use a fork I buy boots ahead of time.

I would agree with the above. You can try to mark it and eye ball it but chances are its going to throw the alignment off somewhat. Be safe and get an alignment when your finshed so you don't end up destroying your tires.
Don't quote me but I am pretty sure the lancer outer tie rod and evo are different. I just got done installing a tie rod on my car and I picked it up for like $45ish shipped from mitsubishiparts, which included the outter tie rod, boot and new nut. For that price just get the whole thing and don't mess around trying to replace just the boot.

Definitely get it re-aligned after the tie rod change. Marking it will just get you in the ballpark. However, you will not need a four-wheel alignment, but the alignment shop will try to charge you for it. Good luck.
