I would NEVER do this unless I had limited choices. I wanted to get all 4 set of tires but at this current moment can not. I wanted to wait after winter to get all four tires. Since I failed an inspection and need two new tires, I need something quick. Currently the car has 235/40/18 by putting (2) 245/40/18, will that be destructive to my drivetrain?
Again this will be until April.
This will be on an evo 8 with rota rims.

Not the best idea. That's over an inch different front front to back. The drive train may not last until April if you mix the sizes.

I'd never chance that. Too big of a difference IMO.

Circumference difference from 79.79" front to 80.77" at the rear so your front wheels will rotate 0.8 mph faster than the rear .

how are your tires so worn that two don't pass inspection and two do? You need to rotate your tires...

If you cannot afford the car; might not be the best car for you.

Transfer cases are expensive. Hitting a guard rail is expensive. Tires, good ones, are not expensive.

I was going to buy tires in the spring time. I dont drive the car in winter so buying winter tires was out of question. I should have rotated my tires, that was the initial issue. Since I moved to NY, I needed to register it here and wanted to do that before my IL registration expired.
In April I will be getting my Hankook ventus tires but did not want to spend the money on it right now. Ill stick with the used tires until April. I barely drive the car in winter, maybe 10-15miles TOTAL during winter. Yet, I like to be very cautious and not do any damage, thats why I rather just get a pair of used tires to pass inspection.

The tire size difference would cause the internal gears in the center differential to turn about 10 revolutions per mile. These gears also turn anytime the car is going around a curve or corner. So, add to that another 10 revolutions. The gears are on a shaft without a bearing so wear could be an issue.

My car doesn't have ACD so I have no experience with that. Supposedly it locks the center differential when you are driving straight. If you have ADC I'd maybe be more worried about the clutches than the gears. But then no two tires are exactly the same and no road exactly straight. Smarter people than me will have to comment on the exact affect on the ACD.

I would never do that. Like other people said its to big of a difference to try to chance it. If you need something quick try Craigslist? Even if you get some nice but cheap tires to get you through inspection, you can buy your good ones after?

This is not an ACD issue, it's a transfer case issue
