Best tire for...... Looking at summer only, a/s, dedicated snow, etc? Any extra details on what type of tire and use would help.

I have a problem with using "best" and "all season tire" in the same sentence. All season tires are designed to be hopefully adequate in summer or winter - never best. Summer tires are hopeless in winter. Snow tires like the Dunlop Wintersport series are best in winter and still adequate in summer. I drove across the country one summer on a set of Wintersport M3's I was trying to wear out. They did okay and didn't wear out. So, I'd buy the now available 3D's, drive through the summer on them and dream of carving up winter.

If you want to stay with AS, I've had both DWS and Bridgestone RE970AS. I've been more happy with the Bridgestones, probably because of the stiffer sidewall helping out when pushed through corners more. I've actually done a couple of autocrosses on each and was more impressed with the Bridgestones. On another set of wheels for stickier tires I've had both Dunlop Star Specs and now Michelin PSS. Can't say much bad about the Dunlops. Decided to try something new since I got even less miles than I was hoping for, and wet traction got reduced sooner than I hoped. The PSS took a while to break in, wasn't too sure about them to begin with. I've since done 2 AXs and was reasonably impressed. Time will tell how much I like them throughout their treadwear.

They are 255/17/40. I need to make the switch to some sticky rubber to start hitting up track days.

If you liked the DWS I'd stick with those. Been an EVO favorite for a while now. I'd also check out the Bridgestone RE970 A/S for a bit better dry traction and response.
