.. it's most likely the pillow-ball style mount. It's not too annoying.. but it does make some noise.
i'm going to call the guys at omnipower today if i can't remedy it.

This is sort of a random idea, but try and see if your perches or even shock body length adjustment rings are loose....even if they don't appear to be...get the wrench on there and take a hammer to the back of it to tighten it very tight....my shock body length ring came loose and was actually starting to try to move...once it was tightened the noise to my knowledge went away.

I got a replacement strut from Omnipower. Ever since I put the new one on, the noise has completely disappeared!!! It now rides just as silent as with the stock suspension! Problem solved for me.

I have JIC coilovers on my IS300 ,not my evo ,and they are clunking in the Right back , I have done every thing that we have all said , I think its the quailty control of them makeing there parts , Such as slop in the pillow ball bearing, and its slaping it self and making that noise we doint like , JIC is a good company but who says The RD is doing there job on makeing there parts 100% tru .

I cleared up a small clunk from JIC coilovers (rear ones) by tightening the pillowball nut with an impact wrench.

The recomendations about checking to make sure the lock rings are tight is also good - I had one starting to loosen slightly after a couple of track days. I ususally mark everything to make sure nothing has moved, too.

JIC Clunking noise

I want to share my previous experiences with JIC coilover, I had a set of their CROSS coilover (same as their FLT-SA1/SF-1) on my '02 996 Carrera C2. I had the exact same noise coming out from my left front shock tower.

I brought my car back to JIC and have their technician look at it, they remove the front left shock and they claimed that it was the problem of not having a helper springs (they do not offer helper springs on SA-1/SF-1). They offer me the helper springs on all 4 corners at $400 installed (since I m working in the industry). Well, I have no choice but just to spend that $400 to find out.

Guessed what? The noise is still there after they installed the helper springs and double checked all bolts. And I was there at JIC with their tech and try to find out what the noises are.

I found my left front shock rod is moving slightly (too much freeplay??) when I turn the steering wheel in either direction. You can actually see the steel damper rod is moving even without the car is in motion (just parked there and turn the steering wheel alone). And you can clearly hear the clunking noise when the rod moves.

I have told JIC this problem and they have seen it on my car too, they insist it is normal and within spec and of course not willing to swap for a new one to try. I was then sold my Porsche with the JIC on it after 2 years and have no more updates on that problem. I m thinking why that left front shock will have a noise and the other 3 do not if they are all within specs??

My initial experience with JIC is not that good of course, that's why i go with the TEIN Flex setup on my EVO now. I m not saying the TEIN Flex is better than JIC, but at least I don't hear any weird noise like the JIC does.

I thought it was my luck to have a bad JIC, but seems like you guys all have the same problem here, I think someone should organize something here to get JIC to fix this problem.

I just finished installing a set of Ohlins on my 05 RS for autocross use. I have a similar clunking in the rear also. I must say though after checking the rear suspension design carefully, that I think most of the noises we are getting when using the upper pillow ball mounts are caused by the soft rubber in the lower mount taking all of the deflection instead of sharing it with the upper mount. That coupled with a very stiffly valved shock is probably causing the clunking at the lower a-arm attachment point. Not to mention that all that high tech shock valving kinda goes to waste with the rubber lower shock mount bushing taking a good bit of wheel travel without the shock piston even moving. lol. With that being said, is anyone aware of a urethane or similar upgraded bushing for the rear lower shock mount?

Mark

You know what, it gets REALLY bad, then stops. Seriously I guess it just needs to settle. It is silent with an ever so slight creak here and there. Omnipower doing great for me.

my JICs do the same thing (front left strut for now - before, it was front right strut) - makes alot of noise, then stops, then back to really noisy..

at first itd alternate every 3 weeks or so, but recently it literally alternated within 3 days of driving it - first day really noisy, second day sound went away totally, then came back third day

then again i drive on crappy roads - so maybe it just never really settles..

You don't understand, it sounded like a cacophony of empty drums constantly being pinged, any slight movement resulted in a creak or a pop. Think VERY VERY OLD mattress. Then I started to price out some TIEN Flex’s and all of a sudden, it stopped. Not a peep, unless I go up a really skewed rise like my driveway, then you get the slightest of reminiscence of a sound. But that is it.

I just took my stock Evo in for a clunking from the front driverside and it was a lower ball joint fixed under warranty. You might wanna have them check your car's for this problem.

I had the same noise in my front right, after taking it to different dealers they found out that my front sway bar was loose on the right side.
