what are coilovers?

dumb newbie question....what's the difference
between coilovers and regular springs+shocks? is it only the
ability to adjust height?

also, doesn't every heigh adjustment require a new alignment?
without (re)aligning, wouldn't the new height affect toe/camber
resulting in potential extreme tire wear?

lots of questions...thanks,

joe

Coil-over systems combine springs and shocks along with an adjustable perch to support the spring. This set-up is most like a race set-up in that it allows tuning of the vehicle through ride height adjustment. Tuning your alignment every time you adjust the ride height is best for optimal tire wear. However, the majority of people who change their ride height do it for short periods like auto-x or road race apps. They will then take it back to the original height after racing for every day driving.
