Lancer Evo X Speakers
^^ wouldn't do that... If you wanted to "upgrade"... i'd do diamond audio, focal, or hell.. even JL Audio...
Alpine = Over priced... and NOT what they used to be.
For stock... it is what it is.. I have the Fosgate/Navi system. It's good enough for some, but there are those who want more...

Well my concern for the sound system is I want a direct input to my ipod in which it charges it. Not just that cheap AUX plug. I dont want to lose any sound from the transfer between the ipod and car. I HATE AUX PLUGS I NEED REAL Ipod cable. ANyone done this yet?
^^ hear you there...In my IX I had a new alpine unit with the fast Ipod interface cable...pretty sure it's exactly how what you want...not sure about the charging part of it though...as far as quality of sound and loss thereof, it's the tops

Yeah I believe if you use a direct ipod cable (where it charges) there is no sound lost and the sound comes directly from the speakers vs. the headphone jack. The sound with a regular AUX is dependent on the sound of the ipod (whether it being high or low). I will check some Evo Specialists in my area to see if they can add a new cable to the stock unit.
Had my lancer for about a year (Tech package with nave and sub etc) It is the loudest factory system I have ever herd. It is very clear (compared to most cars in its price range) and most people should ever have to upgrade it. The speakers, amp and sub anyway.
Please note I use to install and compete in local sound competitions so I know what loud is. That was over ten years ago though.

If you plug your ipod into your car through the headphone port (using the AUX input) then the digital audio stored on your ipod (be it MP3 or AAC format) will be decoded by the IPODs built in DA (digital to analogue) converter. The DA converter in the IPOD is not necessarilly the greatest, however your IPOD can only store digitally encoded music with a pretty low maximum bit-rate. In other words, while the DA converter in the IPOD isn't the greatest, it is more then sufficient to convert the "low" quality audio stored on your IPOD.
That being said, if you hook your IPOD up to an aftermarket stereo system using the "charging port" on the ipod then your ipod is transferring the digital music to the external unit. So whatever head unit you buy will have the DA converter in it. now this DA converter is probably better and is probably more isolated from sources of noise then the built in one on the IPOD. So you might get slightly better audio out of this aftermarket unit. Where the biggest difference in sound will come into play is if the Aftermarket unit has any Equalizers (or basically filters) that it applies to the digital signal before converting it to an analogue audio signal.
Also, because this aftermarket product communicates with the IPOD via the digital port then it can also controll such things as play/pause, forward/back... Some more advanced ones let you use the Aftermarket unit to choose playlists and other advanced features.
My point really is that an aftermarket unit that plugs into the IPOD via the digital "charging" port might produce slightly better quality audio then the standard "Aux" port that connects via the headphone jack. However, unless you really want the ability to controll your IPOD with the head-unit then i wouldn't bother because either way you are playing music that has been encoded at a fairly low bit-rate. Basically, your limiting factor on the quality of the audio is the IPOD in the sense that it cannot store and playback "lossless" music codecs. So spending hundreds of dollars to upgrade your stereo simply for the slightlyimproved audio quality gained by connecting to the digital port over the analogue port is silly.
Now if you just want better speakers and a better headunit and are going to upgrade those anyway then I would recomend that you get a unit that has the built in connection to an IPOD.
Sorry for the lengthy off topic reply...
oh and I think the RF system is decent. If I had a ton of money then I would probably get the car sound proofed with dynamat and upgrade the speakers/sub. However I think the RF system is worth getting the SSS package if you are looking at the GSR. I like the larger spoiler and love the HIDs and the RF is definetly ALOT better then any stock unit I've come across. So basically I'm happy enough with it to spend my money on performance upgrades instead.
