Thinking of getting the new 10' evo mr with the navi. Is it worth it or should I just get an alpine or pioneer and do it myself?

 

Honestly.. if I were to do it all over, I'd have gone aftermarket. I got the OEM system liking the full system integration (CAN bus stuff, etc) but it's all gimmick in the end.

You end up with a dated overpriced system that has limitations on things that most newer Navi units don't, with no real iPod interface! It's pretty sad, actually.

If I were to do it again, I'd go aftermarket as well. Turns out the nav is OK, but the lack of map updates (my car came with maps labeled first quarter 2006; first update since then came out this summer - and I don't know if the maps were revised), and proper iPod integration have turned out to be the deal killer for me.

 

I'm not sure about everyone else, but in the end, I'm glad I have the OEM navi, I think it fits well with the whole interior and the touchscreen is pretty nice.... If you do go with the OEM navi and choose to swap it out, I'm sure there are people here willing to pay $1,000+

 

Adept, it really depends on what is important to you in a navigation system. The OEM navi has its advantages and disadvantages. But, it might offer enough to meet your needs.

No argument there. What is unacceptable is MMNA's policy on map updates (their website says yearly, and we've had one update in four years). I could almost look past the poor decisions they made on media server and iPod integration if I could get up to date maps and POI.

I agree that mitsu dropped the ball big time on the oem unit. If kia can have an ipod integration on their base model car; why in the world can't mitsu have it on their top of the line model with a $1800 navi unit?

I think you should go with an aftermarket unit. There are plenty of good units out there and with the jdm dash kit yours will look as good as a factory installed unit.

 

Just wondering if the OEM navi was actually worth getting with the car. I do know about some disadvantages but not all. More opinions are welcome. And what is this about no full ipod integration?

 

it just means that you can not plug your ipod directly into the NAV unit, you can connect it via the RCA jacks located below the HVAC controls.

 

Not all owners own an iPod or care for the integration... I think the fact that it has a 30gb (Could be different) hard drive for songs is pretty cool... Probably a major surprise when I first owned the car

But only a portion of that can actually be used to store music. As for the RCA jack located by the HVAC controls...the sound quality is aweful.
