Custom Evo Audio Build

Hey guys,
So, I don’t own this Evo, but this is a really good friend of mine that was over in Afghanistan, and I built this up for him.

Let me know what you think:

2008 Evo X

What’s being installed:
New Rims and Tires
Alpine INA-W900 DVD, CD, Navigation, Sat Radio, GPS, Bluetooth, and iPod player, with backup camera
Arc Audio 6000, 6.5" Component Speakers in custom fiberglass doorpods up front
Arc Audio 6.5" XXD Coaxials in the rear doors
Arc Audio 12" Flatline Subwoofer in a custom fiberglass subwoofer box in the spare tire location with plexiglass window for easy viewing of magnet from inside the cabin
Arc Audio 300.4, 4 channel amplifier powering the door speakers
Arc Audio 1000.1, monoblock amplifier powering the subwoofer
Both amps are on a custom amp rack, with removable walls for easy access to the battery and windshield wiper fluid.
Sound Deadener throughout the entire vehicle
Escort 9500ci Radar/Laser Detector/Jammer, with hidden speaker, digital guage, and USB update port
LED lighting in custom door pods, trunk area, and inside subwoofer box to light up the magnet

We also ordered this stuff, but since I’m in Idaho, and he lives in New York, we figured his buddies over there had better install the setup, because we didn’t want any problems on his 3000 mile trip home!
FP Red Turbo
ETS Intercooler/Piping Kit (Black)
900cc Injectors
New High performance Fuel Pump
So, I’ll post some pics up of that when the owner gets around to it in Spring.

Some Sound Deadener

Made a mold of the wheel well, reinforced with metal bars for strength

Molds for the door pods

False Walls, 1 screw on each wall and you can gain access to the battery or washer fluids

Bolted back into the stock location

Flush mount ring for the woofer

Making some braces

The ‘tombstone’ box

Material stretched to make the pods

Layout before false floor

False floor

All panels needing to be covered (luchador mask)

Stock RF Tweeter pods

New tweeter cups in place

3 days till the owner arrives

Little texture paint to match the doors

Escort Speaker for the radar and sub woofer controls

iPod/USB inputs in the center console

Radar Controller Unit and USB update port for the radar

The install looks very clean. Personally, I would have done a few thing very differently from a purely functional standpoint, like not adding a mass of deadening to areas that see no benefit from its use, and using actual sound-squelching materials if that was the goal. Audio-wise, I like how you vented the sub into the cabin. The unfinished inner edge does look a little sloppy when back-lit, and the grill that doesn't cover the entire armrest opening takes away from the install. Not really sure why there are speakers in the rear doors, either, in what seem to be a SQ-driven system. Didn't see any pics of the door skins; I hope the doors were sealed. Overall, though, it looks nice.

As an audio guy, I don't understand the whole system thing, either, aside from two very different conditions. I mean, it makes all the sense in the world to go to some trouble, audio-wise, if music is very important. For example, I go record shopping weekly and I've been doing it since my teens. Music is important to me. To someone else, things may be different.

Then, there's the show aspect, as exemplified by the work seen in this thread. The install is very nice, MUCH better than typical, and it will most likely help the owner score some points. While the concept of audio doesn't exactly enter this option, it still makes sense.

Aside from the two, I have no idea why anyone would want to go through the hassle.

I'm not one for highly involved custom installs especially in an Evo but I think you did a pretty nice job. I would have suggested some modification or outlet for the sub frequencies to make their way into the cabin a bit easier but otherwise nice.

You're so right. Now that I took a better look at the enclosure, there's just a square hole in the back - no tuning, whatsoever.

With those rims and the red text he needs to put some red plastic foil on the mitsu emblems to complete the look

The see-through glass on the front doors was a neat idea btw
And hopefully that microphone works at that position.

Function went out the door when the owner told me he doesn't care about putting anything in it...just wants it to sound nice and have something to look at. As for the sound deadener...the owner had an 06 Lancer, and hated the system I put in it cause it was a rattle can, so he said he didn't want ANY rattles, so I made sure when the bass hit, you couldn't hear any rattles...so that was accomplished. The rear deck lid rattled a bit and so did the wing.....no more. Same for the sides of the panels and doors.....no more.
As far as the rear fill speakers goes, and coupled with the amazing front stage, we didn't need the rear speakers, but he does have passengers quite a bit....so taking the rears out wasn't an option. Owner will never enter an SQ competition, so that wasn't the purpose of this build...but I'm with you. I've been trying to push front stage systems here in Idaho, but people just can't get past not having rear speakers (slaps forehead).
Doors are all sealed up and can only vent through the woofer.

I go through the hassle as a personal challenge. Our ears can only hear left and right, and in order to immitate the best possible listening experience, you have to take a bunch of things into consideration. It's extremely difficult to attempt to replicate a true Audiophiles version of perfect sound. So I try to get my skills better on every install so that I can work up to that level. Every car is different and no matter what, you're trying to make a sound wave replicate what the artists original intention was, which was recorded in a sound studio.....which most cars aren't sound studios. The best way to build a system is to remove parts of the dash, sink the dash forward into the front of the vehicle, and put the speakers where they need to be so nothing interupts them at all.....basically build the car around the speakers...which in 99% of the cases, cannot be done based on budget...but that's the fun of it....trying to get there ON a budget....Ballin' on a Budget if you will.
Upgrading components works for a lot of people, but I'm starting to get to the point where I want to achieve audio-bliss..........sounds like I need to make more money so I can pay for these expenses!
