Stereo / Radio Options for Evo X
Stereo / Radio Options for Evo X
Hi!
I'm looking to upgrade my stock non rockford fosgate audo system in my 2013 evo x gsr. Going through the forum, the most popular option is the Android tablet. It seems like there are two options for this: with and without a rockford fosgate amp. I would like the ability to possible add a subwoofer or upgrade my speakers, does the 10.2 android 8.0 support this? What other options are there for audio upgrade?

They're essentially the same unit. Each on has had various iterations with a couple resolutions, quad core / octa core processors, 2GB / 4GB RAM, and Android 6/7/8 versions. Just pay close attention to the spec of the model you're looking at. Odds are if it's notably cheaper one of those specs is on the low side.
I've seen Android 8 with the quad core CPU so the OS isn't necessarily tied to the hardware, hence my warning to scrutize the listing you're looking at buying from.
Both sizes fit the Evo. The early cars had disc changers that were double DIN and the later cars had a double-DIN touchscreen. Nav cars always were double DIN.

I actually put in a Sony XAV-AX100 in my Evo X. I looked at the android units and I was not impressed, I mean if you want to have the ability to run apps that connect to the ECU for digital gauges, fine, otherwise no thanks. Instead of opting for the no-name chinese android headunits, I went for a Sony stereo unit. I think the interface is so much nicer than any of the android units out there and this one has carplay/android auto which was a major plus. There are also several other versions that have SiriusXM or DVD/CD player features. You need to get a special adapter for the steering wheel controls and for the fosgate system too since it requires a special turn-on circuit or you won't have any sound. Downside to these is the Metra dash unit makes the stereo sit recessed in a bit. Some might not like this look and would rather have the screen be flush to the dash like the stock nav units are. Ultimately, it's up to you what you want to get, I personally like the Sony head units.
Also, if you're installing an aftermarket radio and want to retain steering wheel controls, make sure to remove the hands free module underneath the passenger side dash. This little module will screw with the aftermarket steering wheel control module and things won't work right, it's best to keep the stock hands free module disconnected or completely removed.

Man Sony seems to always come up just short of a great product. Just checked their units out on Crutchfield, they all have a single USB input, and maybe a CD drive. Pity, cause I'd love a unit with a volume knob.
I have a Pioneer AVH-4200NEX and it has 2 USB inputs (one for the phone, other for music), and an SD card slot. Don't think I could have a HU with fewer input options.
But I'd agree. For a head unit, I want it to do a limited number of things and do them well. I don't want it to have a thousand apps, youtube, etc. And I don't trust the Chinese units or Android itself to not start crashing and freezing up.
