If you looked at the dyno sheet you can see by the run number.

Yeah, it was stock, then works, then hks. About 10 minutes between each with a few minutes of monitoring fuel trims waiting for them to be become stable.

You probably have much better things to do with your time, but I wonder how a cone filter compares to these? No MAF pipe or anything, just a simple K&N cone filter.

Well, I'm not Bill and he is certainly free to chime in here whenever he wishes. If you look at the plots you will see the AFR curves. Both the hks and works lean out the mixture under WOT conditions. In both cases (works and hks) the fuel trims were more than capable of compensating for the change in fueling while under closed loop conditions.

To answer your question more directly, if you are tuned on the edge of lean then any change you make to further lean the AFR, be it via an increase in VE or "cheating" the maf, you will risk getting into an unsafe area. If, on the other hand, you are on a safe and conservative tune, you should be fine.

The key is in having the proper monitoring equipment to allow you to keep an eye on boost, egt, and afr to name a few. Baring that, the best bet is to keep it conservative.

I have thought about slapping an AEM dryflow filter I have laying around on to try just that, but the reality is I would not run such a setup for two reasons:
1. Interferance with the maf from the fans (will cause fuel trims to hunt along with the idle)
2. Higher intake air temps

Would be interesting to see, but It won't be possible for me to do that test with the other bits I have lined up, or at least it won't be comparable to a mostly stock car.

Thanks dyno4mance for the heads up. Good info! If I use a drop in, it will be before a tune. For right now, my car is completly stock.

Thanks for fielding the question, and for doing the comparison on the dyno for everyone to see.

For me, it was essential to keep the stock airbox...so I went with the Works filter. It's been on the car for a few months now. I haven't dynoed the car or anything but response seems better than the stock filter element. I don't doubt it may have gained a respectable amount of hp too. It's been so long ago that I switched from the stock filter to the works so I can't really give you a good response. Car feels stronger though and it's my only mod.

www.worksevo.com is their site. and props to the OP for the test between the two drop in's

i would of gone with the works filter but got a sick deal on the K&N, but both are great brands and cant go wrong with either. i highly recommend works products currently have their springs and short shifter, both made an awesome difference.
