If you do not want to mess with anything and do not want to get a custom tune then pull your ECU out, send it to me, I'll load the tune in the ECU and you are done. It takes all of 5 minutes to take the ECU out, it's right under the hood behind air filter. We've flashed a BUNCH of EVOX ECU's through the mail like that.

Personally, if I were you and didn't want to mess with it. I'd buy the few parts you want to get for the car that you mentioned and then go get a custom tune done. That is by far the smartest thing to do. I would not waste $700 on a XX or money on a licensing fee either.
what licensing fee are you speaking of? What sort of numbers are your mail in flashes getting on average? Mileage increase with normail driving?

Ok, I asked some questions in the other threads, but I don't want to hijack someone elses, so i'm going back to mine..

With the AP, if you get it through Perrin, then it's just their maps that it comes with? Or does it still come with the stage 1, 2, valet, fuel econ mode, etc?

Who's prices are the best for the AP?

Cobb offers the stage 1,2, valet, and fuel economy for 91 and 93 octane on there website for free. Also, when I talked to perrin last month about the AP they said they would ship it with one of there tunes, stage 1,2 or 3. I look at it has a bonus tune. Perrins stage one looks to give you alittle bit more torque too than the cobb stage one.

This looks like a good thread I can ask a few questions in. Just got my Evo X last week and I'm quite new to modding. Is a tune necessary after any kind of mod, such as a drop-in air filter? Also, with the AP it sounds like there are only a few maps programmed. So, if my Evo is completely stock and I load one of their maps, I will obviously feel an increase in performance. But what if I start adding mods (nothing crazy: drop-in air filter, TBE, etc)? Does the map have to be changed in order for those mods to show an increase in performance? If so, is there a way to do that with the original AP? Thanks in advance.

if you go with an AP and have the stage 1 map loaded, there should not be any other mods, the drop in might be ok.

I believe the stage 2 is for a car with exhaust and .... i'm not sure about the other one... there's plenty of info on here about it.

Tuning is the best mod for one of these cars and more HP can be squeezed out of them with one. The AP is good for daily use and is safe, whereas a tuner who sucks can cause a lot of problems. The AP can also be tuned by a pro tuner and the map can be saved in the device and can be flashed back to stock whenever you want, as opposed to just having it tuned and having to take the car back to the tuner to flash back to stock yourself.

All of this is stuff I have picked up on here so if i'm wrong on any of it then someone feel free to correct me.

By the way... I went with the AP

I decided on the AP... it just seems to do more and I like having the control over when I flash and how. I like how it's small, I don't need to hook a laptop up to it.. I don't have to have downtime with the car, I can go back to stock anytime I need to instead of having to wait. It just works better for me.

So you are saying that they do the dyno time and a full custom tune for $5?

this has been a helpful thread as i'm a new/unexperienced owner in the decision making process as well. i'm leaning towards the AP and maybe an exhaust so i'm very interested to hear how it has worked out for you.

here's my.2 cents. I'm picking up my new x in a couple hours, (can't wait) and I will be going with Buschur and Dynoflash almost immediatly. I have used them in the past with 3 eclipse gsx's, an 02 wrx and an 03 Evo VIII with great performance results and customer service. Nothing against the other vendors, I'v never used them I just stick with what I know.
On a side note. It's been 3 years since I've had a turbo awd car. Im sitting here like a little kid on christmas eve.
