I once had the car go lean (by about 1 AFR point) on the street while data logging. I did repetitive pulls and started smelling a very strong gas smell. The car had about a half tank of gas in it. I never found a leak, and could not reproduce the problem. In my case, someone mentioned it might have been misfiring for some reason?

This thread, other than making me think about the fuel pump pick up, has done little to help with a solution. Folks seem more interested in squabbling with each other and chastising me for not knowing what is "common knowledge" than providing useful information, I shall search the other forums for a solution other than always drive with 1/2 tank or more.

the only fuel pickup issue I am aware of is when you are below 1/4 tank of fuel..

dont thrash it around corners in that case...

I have driven down to 54L and its fine, just have to drive sedately when running it that low...

well if your not happy with the fact that the fuel pickup on the X(non RS) is a bit poo...

either:
1) install a surge kit - my personal recommendation
2) install an RS tank - too much screwing around

Thank you! The surge kit sounds interesting, I am not familiar with a fuel surge tank or kit so I shall do a search and educate myself. As mentiond earlier in this thread I have googled and searched "RS tank", "Evo RS fuel tank", and and a few other variations and I found nothing pertaining to what it is (I assume it is a Mitsu racing part) or a source for it, nor has the search function found any threads other than this on on the "common knowledge" fuel pickup problem.

EDIT:
Boy is my face red, it just occurred to me that the "RS" referred to could be a Evo model designation. I googled it and came up with an RS as a VIII or was it a IX? Will this tank fit an X (not that I would want to, just curious)? Remember that I have only got involved with the EVO since I bought my X and I know nothing of the heralded history of the Lancer Evolution.

A surge tank is really not the end all answer if the fuel flow from which it is fed from is lacking. It can help in cornering, however there some upgrades that need to be made in the rest of the system.

Honestly, I would like to see the RS tank performing better with documented results. I don't quite see much of the benefits in tank design. It appears the area under the bucket assembly it a little lower but how does that equate to results if the siphon from the passenger side is one of the main issues.

An article from AMS explains how the siphon works. In Tephra or SiC's post a page or two back, one can see the silver siphon tube from the in tank photos of the RS and GSR tanks. This is where the problem lies, at least on the dyno but possibly also in everyday use also.

I'm not really aware of the siphon problem but here's a skeleon view of the RS & stadard tank. You can see it basically has a collector or surge tank (Mitsubishi calls it a reserve tank) built right in it but it still has the same siphon setup. The capacity of the RS version is 5 liters smaller (little more than 1 gallon) and the price is around $500 USD here.

Thanks man for helping, I have a lot of catching up to do. Seems strange that the RS model would have the better tank but a guess it was intended as a basis for a racing Evo where as my MR-T is really intended as a street going sports sedan!

On the dyno and on a mountain road where you have some space to push the car in corners.
