Rough timing guide please! (built motor and EF4)
Hi guys
I'm in the process of getting my car tweaked after break in
I have a bit of phantom knock I'm sure which I'm going to attack on the dyno with a knock box next week.
So I'm wondering what sorts of timing numbers are appropriate on a reasonably aggressive tune, just for my own info.
The setup :
built/sleeved 2.2 (bored)
9.5 CR
93 fuel
MAP EF4 (so i guess FP Black numbers will be helpful also) - I aim to run it at 27psi or so
port/polish head, GSC S2s
4" intercooler, full exhaust, 3.5" intake etc etc.
As it stands, I rough tuned it to 25-26psi
- knock at peak torque at 4-5* . I'm not convinced it's consistent and timing-dependant. probably phantom. BUT, if i put timing up a few degrees it does seem to knock more, with the eye of faith. but not significantly less if i pull timing.
- at 7000 rpm it knocks at 8-9* . Again, if i increase timing it does go up, but it's just not consistent. Pulling timing here kills power but still i get inconsistent knock.
I have "zeroed out" Mivec to remove that variable, no difference.
By "knock" here, i mean counts of 5/6/7+ with unmodified knock tables.
The sensor is torqued correctly to the best of my knowledge!
AFRs sitting on 11.0-11.2 right through.
So, if anyone out there with a similar set up, or with knowledge, can shed some light on what sorts of timing would be appropriate with this setup that would be very useful.
or is it going to be a very custom thing, and the knock box is my sole guide and saviour
My guess, was that at peak torque on 93 and 27psi i should be able to get 7-8* , and maybe 14* or so up top at 7500-8000rpm. But with the extra displacement, and the slightly higher comp ratio, it really is just a guess right now.

^ well i consider myself schooled if that's the case
i still see infrequent knock at 0/1/2* peak torque and 8* at redline.
Anyways I'll find out next week hopefully what's really going on in there!
I'm very conscious of how crap our fuel is for the increased CR... but once it's all sorted the car will only really be driven in anger with good fuel in it (50/50 race gas or straight E85), and pump will be for getting from A to B.

well even 9* uptop is very low...
i was running 16-17 with Kyp's turbo (7000rpm, 25psi)
so I would expect you should be able to run at LEAST 12*, if not a lot more..
u are modifying your lower limit table as well yeh?

yeah lower table done.. so it's giving me what I've dialled up if that's what you mean.
Yep i could run 16-17 up top with the Red aswell, detuned to 14 for track days. same boost.
i was thinking 14* at 8000, 12-13* at 7000 seemed fair, but i have no idea what the CR will do with our fuel, or if the larger bore in itself is more prone to detonation etc.
Anyways as you say it's all guesswork until it goes on the rollers with a listening device.

lol i meant "same boost as you" ie 25psi
but yes, for track i was running 25psi and 14* and slightly richer , on road 25psi and 16* and slightly leaner.
This setup will be something like 26psi for track and (with good fuel) 30ish for dyno queen purposes
