Electronic Boost Controller

Hey,

Just want to guage some opinions on the different boost guages out there....I know I run the risk have a vendor battle but I really just want to know ratings and opinions from actual EVO users:

-functions
-reliability
-difficulty to tune
-performance

I used a Forge MBC on my last turbo application but want to got with an electronic controller on my EVO X

MBC will always be the most simple and dependable.

The AEM true boost is very confusing but does work well.

Greddy Profec B Spec 2 is big and bulky but works so well for the price and really easy to get set up and use.

HKS EVC works amazing and allows the consumer to use a laptop to tune maps for the EBC giving you the most control. - Very cool but expensive...

I would say best bang for buck will be the Greddy Profec B Spec 2... Info HERE

Good luck!!! LMK if you have any more ??

Best boost controller IMO is the AVCR. Have always run them in my cars because they are the most tunable. Is boost dropping off at high RPM? NO problem. Want to have more boost in 1st gear or less for traction, no problem. Getting some spiking in 5th gear? No problem. Not only is it RPM tunable but also it allows boost per gear adjustments which is great for getting boost to hit solidly to what your target is in every gear. Due to load you always get more boost in the higher gears than you do in the lower ones due to differing load rates. Setting it up per gear eliminates this problem and works awesome. I don't know of any other boost controllers that are this adaptable for the money.

^^^ I will agree 99% The AVCR is simply amazing with its ability to tune per gear
however the HKS evc has similar capabilities:

The latest HKS EVC VI Boost Controller (45003-AK005) has new advanced features such as boost pressure correction mapping so boost levels can be fine tuned for various engine and vehicle dynamics. The EVC Easy Writer software allows tuners the ability to setup and monitor these new advance features of the EVC via a laptop computer.

Main Easy Writer Controllable Settings:

Boost Pressure Correction Mapping:
* Viewed in 3-Dimensional Graphs and 5x5 Maps, boost pressure can be fine tuned for: RPM, Vehicle Speed, Throttle Position, RPM + Throttle Position, or Speed + Throttle Position.
* Map Function ON/OFF (whether to use a boost pressure correction map), choice of which correction map to use.
* Target Boost Setting
* Scramble boost level and duration
* Bar Graph display settings:
A-Mode and B-Mode boost level, Vehicle Speed, RPM and Throttle PositionBar Graph Peak Function ON/OFF and Peak Level
* Boost correction level
* Offset value
* Offset map setting value input
* Measure of Unit (kPA or PSI)
* After-Image Function ON/OFF (If a change from positive atmospheric pressure to negative atmospheric pressure occurs, the peak positive boost value will be displayed)
* Sampling time setting (boost monitoring in a period)
* Boost warning function ON/OFF and warning level
* Drop boost function ON/OFF and drop level (when boost reaches the warning value, boost pressure will drop a user preset level)
* Display backlight brightness setting
Data Logger
Easy Writer software coverts laptop PC into data logger for engine/vehicle signals being monitored by the EVC boost controller (Boost Pressure, RPM or Vehicle Speed, and Throttle Position).
Save Settings
Settings can be saved to user’s laptop computer. If changes are made thereafter, the saved settings can be recalled and restored.

^^^ All that is really cool but needed? maybe not easy of use is the Greddy. Which one is able to do most? HKS, APEXI and BLITZ all have very technical ones. The choice is up to you. Good luck!

Actually the EVC does not do it by gear. The AVCR actually knows what gear you're in based on RPM and speed calculation. The EVC only estimates it by vehicle speed which can be off in terms of what you want for gear offset based boost control. Also, AVCR is less expensive which is nice for people who want that kind of control on a budget.

How difficult are EBC to set up?? Does anyone know how to get around the warrantee thing in case of detonation?? Also, should I first upgrade he IC pipe and possibly the intake before messing with the boost??

^^^ Yes the EVC can do per gear boost also!(in red) and even much more than the AVCR. Im not here to fight, but help the OP with choosing the best option for him.

Best price for performance ebc is AEM True boost or mostly greddy profec b spec 2. I have personally used and have tuned with every single boost controller I have listed. So I speak from personal experience including 3 AVCR's vs just reading the manual. Good Luck

I was using D-Tech from TurboXS which also allows for map tuning and per-gear maps, but with Gameboy instead of laptop. Not sure if it will work with Evos though

Pretty much what Vivid said...

Greddy Profec B Spec II is what we recommend... Easy to use / setup, simple install.

Blitz Dual SBC Spec R (Dual solenoid) - Beefy... did I mention...dual solenoid... easy setup.

Greddy E-01 = great boost controller! Many Many functions... Cool display...
** Discontinued **

I like all 3...

on my IX i started w/ a manual which was simple and got the job done, HOWEVER until i used an EBC i never noticed how much slower it would hit peak boost. On a dyno you'll still hit same peak whp but if you compare torque graphs (at least on mine) you'll see it kick in more sudden/violently w/ an EBC that is able to shut off pressure signal to the wastegate until much later versus gradually leaking it out. The EVC6 i had worked very well in this respect. However, mine got stolen and i opted to replace it w/ a Greddy Profec B spec II (God forbid i chose something other than HKS) but I wasnt about to pay another 500bucks for a EBC. The profec was 289usd at a local speed shop. Anyways, i was surprised by how much easier it is to set up! No complicated settings etc... although great... sometimes too many variables to mess w/ just cause frustrations (at least during initial setup) Anyways, a simple fast setup and i was already peaking at my normal 24psi and what is messed up is that it held boost just as well as my EVC6! I didnt want to admit it, but damn this thing works VERY well! Funny thing is... my infatuation w/ HKS products led me to obtain a used HKS EVC5 and i installed it to replace the Profec. Im currently having issues w/ it now... It will hit target boost of 24psi... but then taper to 21psi quickly. Then during upshifts it will only hit 22psi and go back down to 20psi... never able to hit the peak boost again until i start over. Im currently messing w/ it to try to get it to work like i want it to. (hit 24psi and hold it within 2psi no matter what gear im in and not fall off after i shift) Needless to say, the Profec B II is sitting in my garage and i've already promised to install it on my friends dsm... I hate to say it... but i agree w/ the shops above. Bang for the buck and ease of setup and use AND best performance.. I'd go w/ the Profec B II

Funny thing is... back in the early 90's i also thought the Profec A was the sheit! It allowed my Supra and MR2 turbo to hit target boost regardless of weather or load and held it perfectly. (however the Profec A was a pricey part back then w/ its fuzzy logic)

Anyways, hope that helps... Just my 2 cents on the use of 3 types on an EVO.

how much hp and torque gain do you usually get with a boost controller?

or do you even get any?
