Need Help, car dies in rain?
Need Help, car dies in rain?
I have had this problem happen about three times now and don' t know how to resolve this issue. What happens is when starting the car in rainy conditions the car just wants to cut off. The RPMs just drop when on or off the gas? I have found that if i get it started and putter around for a little bit until the engine gets warm then the problem stops. What do you think the problem may be? any help would be greatly apreciated.
The mods on the car are as followed: IC, L+Uicp, CAI, Dp, Tp, Exhaust, tune by Jester

Mine does this sometimes too. Did it yesterday as a matter of fact. Mine doesn't do it just in rainy weather. That's not a factor. Mine has done it 3 times since I got the car in Feb.
ok don't trust what i'm saying because its not from an evo, but i had a car that did that exact thing. the problem was the distributor and plug wires weren't sealed very good and any water that touched them could leak in and kill the engine. i don't know if that has anythign to do with an evo but i'm just sayin it fit those exact symptoms in my case.

Guessing it is something electrical for sure, Do you still have your engine cover on cause any water getting on the coils and wires could short and ground engine and kill it.
OP: I have a very strong feeling that I know what your problem is, but I have to ask a few questions first:
The intake you are running... what brand is it? My guess is that like many people, you mistakenly call a short ram intake a cold air intake. If the filter is ANYWHERE in the engine bay, it is NOT a cold air intake. So, if what you have is really a short ram intake, a common problem that has been well documented here on the forums is that because of where the filter sits on most of these intakes, when the AC is cut on, the fans behind the radiator blow directly on the filter, making the MAF sensor go nuts.
This causes the rpms to jump up and down erratically, leading to engine stalling when the rpms drop low enough. Now, you said that the problem happens most often when it's raining, right? Well, when it's raining, most people use their defroster, which... ding, ding, ding... uses the AC. If this is the case, get a heat shield for your intake (AMS and Buschur both make them for their intakes for this exact reason). I hope this helps, because if this is not what's causing your problem, then it's probably electrical. Good luck.

it is a true cold air intake the filter sits on the lower left front of the bumper out of the engine bay. I just got home from work the car still is suffering from this problem don't know what to do i guess ill just have to make time to go get it checked out at BVP.
I had this problem with my 06 Ralliart, does your CEL come on?
If it does check your throttle body postion sensor, if not its either water getting to spark plug or your CAI is sucking up some water.

Do you think the problem may be if the throttle body sensor is getting wet? It seems that water leaks through the hood vents around that area.
What CA intake are you running? If the cai pulls in any water in could jack up the mass air flow sensor. With a broken sensor you have a lot of problems. If the intake is close to the ground it could pull up water. I recommend the AEM intake itseems to give the bet results. Good luck
its ur intake. the cold air intakes for evo x i hear are located near the front bumper so you should make it a top prority to not go fast through puddles. and if u have a regular intake check the filter and other parts of it to see if water could possibly slip in.
