Exhaust....

So why oh why is the megan racing type 2 exhaust so much cheaper than any other dual catback out there? I mean, it's half the price of any other exhaust. The cheap part of me is screaming buy it buy it, the rest is wary of a putting a 'subpar' part on my baby... So anyone have info about this exhaust?

You get what you pay for basically. Pay attention to the wary thoughts when it comes to car parts. Get a higher quality exhaust. All I know is that the megan header or megan exhaust sound raspy on Eclipses.

It's made out of mild steel.

There's another exhaust that's made here in the US and it runs slightly lower than the megan. It's made by machines and the welds are great. The Exhausts for the X are just over priced. It's one of those products where there's a high margin for profit.

You really want Stainless steel at the very minimum for an exhaust that will last.

Yep, didn't realize the megan was mild steel. Would never put that on my car, even in TX where I could probably get away with it.

I don't know where you guys got your info from... this is most definitely stainless.

As far as quality, it's all stainless with good welds. An exhaust system is just a bunch of piping, a couple flanges and a muffler. As long as it fits properly, it's pretty hard to mess up.

There are different stainless steel alloys ... it's probably 409 instead of 304. That would make it cheaper.

^^Very true. Easy way to tell....stick a magnet to one of the pipes. If the pipe is magnetic, it's 409. If it's not magnetic at all, it's a 300 series stainless, probably 304.

That being said, I have a stainless Megan Racing muffler on my other car and it's not magnetic.

409 is made from primarily from iron/chromium, 304 is similar but also uses nickel. 304 has better resistance to heat and corrosion but costs more.

people put to much emphasis on stainless vs. mild..... honestly as long as you live in a non-salty area a mild steel exhaust will last as long as you own the car... so no worries.
