Dump the muffler

I figured for racing I could stand the noise and knew the OE muffler was heavy. So I ordered a flange, 180 tube bend and a dynomax racing bullet muffler from Summit. Got it together today. Hah. Sounds hardly any louder at all. If I didn't say anything you'd never guess it's essentially open exhaust. I haven't a clue why Mitsu put that monster muffler back there. This is perfectly fine for street use...even if it were a grandma car.

But this was just a rear muffler replace. Still stock plumbing including cat to behind the axle. I'm sure a turbo back would be a different story. But for those who want to replace that muffler with expensive aftermarket, forget it. Just pick up a bolt-on flange and a tubing bend and make up a straight pipe. See if you still want to spend hundreds of dollars after that.

It will go back onto the lift later this week when my skid plate arrives. I'll snap one then. I may have to email it to you though...my PhotoBucket maxed out. I guess they want money now.

the turbo quiets the exhaust sound a lot vs an NA car. i came from 4cyl N/A motors which were loud *** screamers with headers, test pipe and straight exhaust. the turbo itself is a restriction and it quiets the car down quite a bit.

that's not to say there aren't loud turbo cars but yea this car is surprisingly quiet.

i did the same thing with a Borla bullet race muffle. My entire cat back weighs about 7 pounds. I also have a resonated test pipe and it is still not that loud. Sounds great infact. I have mine turning down right before the rear half shafts. Entire cat back cost me $300. This pic was before I added the test pipe.

Thanx, I'll try it. I did just do a test run, and it timed out on Browse. But I messed around a little more and think I got it working.

I am amazed this is not much loader than stock. Have you had someone drive behind you to give the opinion? I only ask because on my AMS Dual Tip exhaust I know its much louder than stock, and if I removed the restriction plate on the pipe that comes right off the catback pipe, I imagine it would be really loud. I have the medium plate on now and I know it's quite a bit louder than stock.

Not doubting, just trying to make some sense of this.

I got a second opinion from my wife who was working in the garden when I was revving it on the lift. She agreed it seemed very quiet. But remember, it's not even a cat-back. Just a rear axle back.

Educate me on this restriction plate you spoke of. First I've heard of it. What is it, why is it there, what changes can you make to it? I was expecting and hoping for more of a change than I got. Is this where I should go next?

the cutout/end of your setup is right before the fuel tank? Back in the philippines, we're allowed to have this kind of setup (we called it "scav" setup). we like the sound and the power it's producing. but the problem with that setup is droning (which you said was not so i guess it's ok). And the other possible problem is that (if your setup is right before the gas tank), it could be dangerous because prone to fire in cases when the gas tank has leaks. This happened a friend of mine that has this setup and his car backfired and it so happened that he had a small leak (this was e85 also) and set the car on fire. luckily it was e85 that the car didn't burn up so fast that he was to able some of his things.

You bring up a good point I did not think about. I plan on doing the ETS Cat Back with no mufflers after my GT35R build. I figure I dont need a lack of pipes to draw attention from the authorities. So if I can make it another month I will be good to go lol. But thanks for the heads up.

The drone to my ears at least is not bad. But then I have run bullets race mufflers on full headers and no cats on my viper and vet's. After those the EVO sounds very tame.

Okay, I did that, editing original post. But I got a link to the image instead of the image. What did I do wrong?

Anyway, the photo link is up there for whoever cared.
