just got an APT intercooler

Just got this today, its built good, looks and feel solid. Met a guy at a meet that had one with a fpred upgrade pushing over 400whp so I figured I'd give it a shot. Also welcome he told me about this website too, I'm coming from a s14 with a t3 turbo. I saw the intercooler on ebay going for more money than on the company website.

Welcome to evom, you probably have 1000's of hours into that s14, but you'll be happy with the X after a tune. I have this intercooler, there will always be haters but its quality, the core is from a real heat exchange manufacturer and releases heat well and under 400 shipped u cant beat it. I got a crazy deal on 2 and have the other for sale in the market place, ciao

Yeah it goes easy, I used stock couplers and had no leaks after u get it on take a quick blast to ensure no leaks before throwing bumper on, I forgot what I did, wasnt a leak but I did take bumper off twice, lol

might do this. Just not sure I have no doubt it flows tons more than stock but how does it compare to the big dollar ones.

At least 5 people are running them I know about, should see some dyno sheets. Mine is great. I'm getting retuned in a few weeks. Other X forum has some posts

Anybody else think the end tanks look like a horribly cheap design? Like there'd be some major pockets of air from all the sharp corners?

You can't beat the price, and maybe the price makes up for the craptastic end tank design...

Is this your first turbo car?, this welded entank design is used on many Evo X intercoolers, and has beed used on all turbo cars for many years, While the cast end tanks are nice ETS just made 800 whp with welded endtanks and AMS has made beasts for years with welded Endtanks. End of the day AMS makes great stuff but the APT unit will take cars to 500-600+ whp for low cost, Its nice to have a cheap alternative, not everyone has 600-900 to blow.

I think the ams intercooler was a weld and then decided to go with cast.
I see it like this. If It's not that bad it may be a really solid option for the stock frame turbo crowd. On the street if it is even decent it will give probably no performance decrease vs a big name intercooler. On the track It might take a big turbo set up to see the difference. IMO not a bad option but not for everyone but I can see why this is so tempting the big names are so expensive some have even jacked up their price since the evo x came to the market. I want something in the middle in the 500 range with cast end tanks I think this is only fair not a good deal but fair but all of those are 700 plus and should really sell for around 600 shipped there is to much markup I know a profit is needed butt the price should stay or go down the rd is done and money has been made cost on material has gone down labor rate likley has not increased and production cost's get cheaper.

i want someone from a shop to post in here after whitecomet's comment. he is totally correct as far as the R&D goes and the fact that many shops that offer intercoolers for the X have been well established long before the X. there really should be no reason i can get a stock X turbo for 200-300 less than an aftermarket front mount. i dont mind paying for what i get but sometimes you just have to wonder and ask the question. the APT intercooler will definitely be my next upgrade after my stock turbo gets ported, i get my DW1000's and my retune. there i will post dyno results and logs to show intake air temps and so on.

This has nothing to do with cast vs weld, I was referring to end tank design. It looks like one of the cheapest I've seen advertised.

Here's the ETS for reference:

Notice how the end tanks taper wherever possible, compared to the APT...

I'm just pointing out you get what you pay for. ETS is undoubtedly higher priced than the APT.

Is this your first look at an intercooler? Or perhaps you're biased because you're selling one for profit?

^^^^ thats the 4 inch core, it has a large taper, the APT is 3.5 inch with the stock 2.5 outlet. Buy an AMS and enjoy that, its built very good. There have been thousands of 500+ whp cars built with this style end tank (including AMS intercoolers), its not for you but many people will be happy with it.
