Exedy Stage 2 Clutch Install - what a nightmare

Eventually I'll make a post about the whole process but for now I'm stuck on the TOB. It's a new TOB/wave spring/snap ring that came with the clutch.

The snap ring keeps sliding down the TOB shaft when trying to engage the wave spring for the first time. The ring is supposed to slip unger the wave spring collar then not let the collar pass back by therefore engaging the TOB.

Any ideas?

I'm really concerned that this thing will pop off in the other direction if/when I finally get it installed.

I've been trying to get the forum vendor I purchased it from and Exedy tech support to give me a call but apparantly they are all on vacation.

Thanks

Little advice for you guys contemplating taking on this job. Pay somebody else. It's a big PITA much harder than any other clutch I've ever done.

So the snap ring is not engaging when you push lever back? I had that problem had to pull trans back off and make sure the snap ring on the cover was correctly installed. Sometimes you can bump it with the input shaft as you're putting it in. Put trans back in and snapped right in place first try.

The snap ring pops out of it's bead and ends up pushed back by the wave spring collar to the face fo the TOB. I've made sure by looking through the access port everything is properly aligned before trying the lever. Several attempts so far. It's killing me.

I'm dead smack in the middle of a clutch install on my X... and you're right, what a pain in the ***... NOT fun. Hopefully I don't run into an issue with this wave spring crap. I destroyed the stocker on the way out... became disassembled into like 6 individual pieces.

Sounds like you didn't get the fork to disengage. Ran into that problem too. Had to do the 6 bolts on the flywheel to get it apart. Tore that wave spring up trying to pry/pop the TOB before that. Good luck.

If you think its gonna take you 2 days, give yourself 4.

Amen. This is not a normal tuner car clutch that you can drop on your chest and wheel out on your crawler. The thing weighs nearly as much as most engines. If you aren't sure you can do it, don't even try. Best bet would be to asist on one first even if you have done a bunch of other clutches in the past. The thing is really packed in there and a few of the bolts/nuts are nearly impossible to reach without experience. Second time through would be much easier but still not worth it. Never again.

I have a question, how much more work would it be to just pull the engine and replace the clutch with engine out? It sounds like you have to disconnect almost everything any way.

Really wouldn't be much more work. We ended up taking the engine off the mounts to get room anyway.

Same here when we did my friends clutch. Literally if you have little to no experience working on cars, dont even try. You need to have done a least a couple clutches.

And as stated before, some bolts will take you 5-10 min to get to you first time because they are buried between the transfer case and the trans. To drop the motor is would just be a matter of the wiring harness.

Thanks for posting this as it confirms a shop will be doing mine.

The emotional trauma would not be worth it!
