Seeking some new clutch advice

Recently my OEM clutch began slipping at 27k miles, so it's time for a new one. I've been searching around all morning but still need a little direction. My HP goals are nothing ambitious - currently I have an Injen intake kit with a Cobb AP running their Injen 93 tune. I will, perhaps, upgrade to a TBE w/ Cobb Stage 2 tune in the next year or so, so I'm figuring maybe ~325 tq max.

I'd like to keep cost under control as much as possible, so I've arrived at 2 clutches I think will work:

Exedy Stage 1 - rated at 382tq - $497

Works Stage 1 - rated at 400tq - $569

My Evo is my DD so I'd like to retain the stock driveability as much as possible. Does anyone have any experience with these two clutches and possibly be able to recommend one over the other?

Also, I'm thinking of including the Magnus CMC as well, just to cover my bases. Thoughts?

Either will work perfectly for you and both will be about the same drivability-wise. Be sure to remove your clutch restrictor pill too. I've personally had good luck with WORKS products so that's who I'm leaning towards (along with Clutchmasters and SPEC) when it comes time for me to replace my stock clutch.

Thanks Kracka. Would you recommend the Magnus CMC as well or do you think I'd be safe on the stock one with the Works clutch?

Let us know what you end up getting and what you think about it. I'm going to make my decision in the same direction as you as I'd like to stay as close to stock feel. Was thinking of Exedy Organic or maybe even stock replacement but I think I may be over the power level of stock after my next round of mods.

Ok, so after reading how completely craptacular the stock CMC is, I felt it's a good thing to not be left stranded so I went with the Works Stage 1 kit and the Magnus CMC replacement. I'll update this post after installation and provide some feedback.

I plan to do the AMS clutch ring when I do my clutch. For a mild clutch upgrade I think it's enough, but that's just my opinion.

Yeah I hear ya, I did consider that route but this is something I only want to have to do once. Going with the Magnus is really more about peace of mind for me.

Just my 2-cents here, but it doesn't seem like peace of mind comes with any of the aftermarket CMC's due to their bleeding issues, adjustment problems, etc. If you do get one though, the Magnus seems to be the better choice.

I have the Magnus CMC and a Clutchmasters FX300 going in next week. SPEC was going to be my first choice (2+ or 3), I did some research and asking around and found a lot of negative feedback about them. It seems their welds seem to break, a lot. As far as the CMC, if you're going with a higher pressure plate than stock, Magnus is the way to go.

How much were you quoted if you don't mind my asking?

Clutch plus CMC was around $875, installation will be around a grand.

I know your looking at the Works and Exedy stage 1 clutches, but for what its worth here is my review of the ACT HD 6 Puck sprung/streetlite flywheel.

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...-flywheel.html

P.S. Even with the HD 6 Puck I use the AMS reinforcement ring on the stock CMC with no issues.

Thanks for all the input guys. I also made the decision to get an O2 downpipe and test pipe installed since that'll be taken off anyway. I'll be pretty much done after this I think.

I ran this setup, but with MAP flywheel, and my AMS ring did not prevent my CMC from failing it lasted 1500 miles. Now my CMC did not split and make a mess, but it did fail at just under 10K miles. If you want to try the AMS ring you can have mine for cheap. I am installing the Magnus upgrade currently.
