Stock evo x over boosting 25psi++?

I just installed a Defi boost gauge on my "stock" (no visible mods) 2011 GSR. I was hitting 22-23 psi in 3rd, then shifting fairly short to drop the revs to ~3k in 4th. Boost would spike 25psi very quickly then shoot down to ~20 and falling.
I was very surprised to see that kind of boost in what I thought was a stock EVO.
Also, my girl was behind me on these WOT pulls and she noticed a puff of black smoke at the same time she thought I was just getting in the throttle/boost.
I am thinking its really time for a tune............ already!?!

same here. spikes up to 25psi then immediately falls down to 14psi. all my car has is cat back exhaust and knn drop in filter... is it normal for a pretty much stock 2010?
