CAM/BUILD suggestion EVO X
im wanting to utilize cams as an upgrade for my 08 X MR. i am planning on going to a fp green/red within the future now that FP only does rebuilds...
i am having the hardest time figuring out cam choice...
my research concludes that if i want reliability, and also immediate response. Cams that retain stock valvetrain are the best idea... (not sure if this is true).
the last thing i care about is numbers...
im wanting more and more immediate power form the my X
current mods
greddy axle back
ams test pipe
ams fmic kit
dw 1000s
dw355 lph
e85
making 305whp and 350tq
im butt hurt because a guy with bolt ons on 91 in his o4 sti actually kept up with me last night untill about 80mph and im wanting to close that gap completely.
mods coming soon
downpipe
fp green/red
cams
any input would help me a ton on what cam choices have worked with you guys...
thank you greatly.
There is quite a difference in response from a green to a red-- and if you want immediate response--- determining when you want it ( rpm) is a huge factorin turbo choice. Look at the dyno numbers that are all over for your turbo choice and get an idea of its functional range and then look at dynos for cams and do the same--match you cam rpm range with turbo rpm range and you will have a nice set up.. You say you dont care about numbers--what exactly do YOU mean by that?

essentially my car will only be used for drag, and stop light to stop light race. maybe even some rolls in there.
ideally i would like my power as fast as i can possibly have it... even if that means top end dies off hard. why? because i have the SST so i will just shift out and regain power.
i agree 100% with what your saying. im thinking more stock like cams and a green are gonna have to be the way to go for me...
and numbers dont matter to me because for example... the guy that i raced with the sti said he had 400whp when my car is only at 300whp... but i beat him. Winning is more important to me regardless of the numbers...
idk if that makes sense i dont want to sound stupid in saying that
look at the gsc cams, like the S2 and green or similar stock frame turbos, thinking red and blk are further up in rpms then you want to be, from what I understand the BBK turbos are awesome as well-- I run the HKS and have similar requirements, no lag and power on demand and I get it. GL with your choice.

thank you a bunch man
lets talk, any damage scratching or scarring at all???

It almost sounds like you want a quick spool off the line though which is not what you'll get from the bigger turbochargers.
Besides when it really comes down to it (at least around here), everyone will be just trying to run you from a roll ready to punch it hard at 5000rpm or higher. Meaning the lag is meaningless since they will have instant spool above 5-6K and simply destroy from a roll.
But from a stop those very same cars have to burn the hell out of their clutch to take off quickly otherwise they eat it to 60mph then come whizzing by everyone winning the fight to 80mph.... (meaning with this setup if the race doesn't last long, you never get to catch up and thus lost. Guys with V8's do this, they see they are pulling hard from a stop and let off assuming they won before you even spool up that 700whp 6266).
It's really two conflicting setups.....
1. Do you want to always destroy everyone from a stop and be first to 60? (small turbo)
2. Or do you want to lose to 60 but win to 80+ where you destroy all? (big turbo)
The only way you get both is to run the #2 setup and be ready to launch from 5000rpm+ where longevity and clutch life will suffer tremendously compared to rolling it out and simply spooling fast. If you get caught off guard or are in the wrong rpm range the #2 setup will always lose. If prepared and in the power band the #2 setup will usually win.
You have a chance with the stocker if caught in the wrong gear/rpm. Not so much with a Red+. Thus most people like the stock fast spool. You should fear the guy with the high hp laggy setup who is never caught off guard....
For the OP I vote for the big turbo + driver mod to always keep it in the power band. Forget stoplight races to 60.
As it stands I like the opposite and prefer being able to destroy anything to 60 and more importantly take off fast out of a corner. To each their own.

I notice you're in Colorado, are you at pretty high elevation? I know you say you don't care about numbers but 300whp on E85 is low by any standards and I'm trying to figure out what's going on there.
