'15 GSR Very Weird Sound When Coming on Boost?

TL;DR for those who want to click away: What do stock EVO Xs sound like when coming on/building up boost ('15 GSR if that even matters)????

Hello all,

I just got my '15 GSR a couple of days ago, and I've been noticing a couple of weird sounds, that I didn't notice on the test drive.

When coming onto boost, the sound is a very weird, tinny, "shreddy," kind of sound. It almost sounds like maybe some marbles or something. This sound doesn't happen when just revving the car; it only happens under load.

I haven't done a very good job of explaining the sound, it's a lot harder that I thought it would be when I decided I should make a post lol (I recorded some videos yesterday, but the sound isn't really picked up amongst road noise, and the whining sound of the car in general that the video seems to have accentuated).

All in all, maybe I'm just comparing this to the last experience I had with a boosted car, which was a modified mazdaspeed3. Stock, that car didn't really make any noise at all, that's why I may be confused; modified, the speed 3 made a very smooth airy boost sound which I expect is typical. The evo, sounds like it is a more turbulent/ maybe even "fluttery" sound. Not so much so as to say is sounds like legit flutter or compressor surge or something. I figure maybe this is something that is attributed to the fact that this car has a soft uicp? But that doesn't actually make any sense when you really think about it...

For a car this new, I don't know whether to be really concerned, or not to be concerned at all, each for various reasons. I was gonna go test drive another evo or two, to compare, but the dealership I went to yesterday closes earlier than the one I bought mine from, so I didn't have a chance yet.

I've done my fair share of reading, and this is the only thread that I can find in which someone describes the sound closest to what I seem to be hearing, however with this person, their remedy to their problem would be very unlikely to be the same problem on my brand new car!: http://www.evoxforums.com/forums/sho...s/62037?page=4
(I don't recall reading any rules regarding posting links to other forums while reading all the stuff new members should read, correct me if I'm wrong)

TL;DR - I guess this could all be also phrased as: what do stock EVO Xs sound like when they come on boost (I have been doing part throttle only as I'm breaking the car in, but the sound is pretty much there when building up any sort of boost other than very very low boost near vacuum)????

Any help at all is greatly appreciated guys!! Idk if I'm going crazy or what, but as a analytical personality type with really bad ocd this has been killing me, and I figured after all the digging I've done on the internet, I might as well ask

My '15 GSR is pretty much stock. There's basically no real induction noise with the stock airbox and the exhaust note doesn't exactly excite. I think what you're hearing is normal and as soon as you put an intake or exhaust on it you won't notice any longer.

Mine makes a weird ticking noise at idle while warming up. In fact it makes a bunch of weird noises so it's probably normal lol.

That's for damn sure, this car doesn't exactly sound stellar in this stock form. I hope it will sound a lot better with intake/exhaust mods

Lol not exactly a luxury car

I went to a Mitsu dealer today to test drive an evo and see if It was the car in general, or just mine, and they were definitely treating it like I was trying to test drive a Lambo or something! Test drives only after a credit check and we approve on terms (**** that, especially since I already bought one). After tremendously BSing my way through it with my friend, we convinced them to at least give us a ride in it, and it sounded the same. Even this intermittent sound that comes and goes when the AC is on... Not to mention how awful he was at driving stick.. I thought I'd share this funny story. Oh ya and there was a 4 THOUSAND DOLLAR markup on an evo with like 100 miles on it, ya no thanks. This is Concord Mitsu for those NorCal folks just in case some one from here is reading; go to Capitol Mitsu in San Jose instead!! Way better

All of this sounds about right.

Mine makes the funky compressor cycling sounds with the AC on. All the bizzare noises that are usually filtered out on cars by sound deadening seem to play like trumpets in the X!

I guess it's time to start intake and exhaust shopping; not for the power gains but for the noises!

my guess is it's your exhaust manifold heat shield. mine makes a tiny bit of noise.

Ya Mitch I don't understand why you'd do that on any forum, it's kinda nonsensical, I was like wtf

I've been thinking the same, felt oddly satisfying to hear you say the same. Only thing that I contemplate when I think that is that, why do I hear it particularly when boosting, and it's kept somewhat at bay if I'm applying small throttle and no boost to reach the same speeds (identical rev ranges as well). I'm not 100% knowledgable on these cars by any means so maybe that doesn't matter, the turbo is so close to the exhaust manifold obviously, that it wouldn't be surprising that it causes the heat shield to make that resonance sort of sound

Either way, my car is stock (for now) and I've got a warranty, that's as far as I should truly be concerned at this given moment

Really appreciate you guys responding by the way liking this forum

A lot of people describe pre-detonation as sounding like 'popping popcorn' or marbles. Sorry, not trying to freak you out but it's what came to mind. Can you post a clip?

Ya definitely

I tried recording a vid a few times before posting this, but the sound was being drowned out be all the other crappy sounds the car makes naturally, my friend and I were discussing a way to get the sound on camera, I'll try that today with him and post it up

Mount go pro under your hood! Zip tie it to something solid. I did this so many times on my Ecoboost F150 to find strange noises.

There is a cheapo one that's like 100 bucks now. I bought the 500 dollar one and it was just a waste. I don't even use any of the other settings...

Just by the description I wonder if it's detonation too. Detonation I've heard on cars sounds like old coffee perkilators when they make coffee. Or marbles in a shaken coffee can if its real bad. Did you fill up with premium gas? Low grade fuel can cause issues on boosted cars.
