Does anyone know if there are any structural difference between the lancer and the evolution?

It's not a structural issue, just a defective latch. They caught the problem way back in May, long before any Evos were even close to rolling down the assembly line. It won't apply to Evos at all.

the regular lancer does very well in crash testing, The old evo had like 2/5 for the front side impact and the new lancer has 5/5!

It was a latch problem. Mitsubishi did a recall on it in May. Here is the crash video of after the May release: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27bPRas3Id4

Actually the old Lancer/Evo had a pretty good frontal crash results, it's the side impact that kind of suck as in one of the tests the side beam actually broke off from the bottom. http://www.automotive.com/2004/12/mi...ety/index.html
