So where did you find the information stating the JDM version is, in fact, lighter?
Doesn't sound feasible, more like an assumption based on the myth that people believe everything in Japan, is better because-its in Japan.
It states that the GSR with the 5M/T weighs 1520kg (3351lbs) and the GSR with the TCSST (there is no MR in Japan) weighs 1540kg (3395lbs). However, from what I understood from the crappy Google Translation, both cars are not equipped with things that are standard on the US-spec Evolutions (mainly on the MR). These are things like side curtain airbags (+10kg), Rockford Fosgate sound system (+20 kg), what looks to be leather seats(+10kg) and electric sunroof (+20kg). This means that a fully equipped Jap-spec GSR with TCSST would weigh in at 1600kg (3527lbs), only a bit more that a base US-spec GSR and much less than fully equipped MR.

Zippo, good info. Merely stating the USDM evo is heavier than the JDM evo didn't have any back up.
However, even though you've got some numbers, the options themselves seemingly dictate the curb weight of the vehicle.
I can't imagine, at least, I hope very much that the JDM evo doesn't have any tricks up its sleeve to be any lighter. It doesn't seem cost effective, to start with.

The only reasons for the US-spec models being heavier are more standard equipment, such as 6 airbags instead of 4, and beefier body reinforcements (like crash beams) that apply to the American safety regulations.
