To hear him tell it, it was great to first get the car, but he could never truly call it his. There were limits on how far he could drive it in a given year, what he could do to it, and other dealer-imposed restrictions. And yes, modifying was right out. In short, he always felt like he was driving a car the dealership still owned...which wasn't far from the truth. And, if he decided NOT to get rid of it after the lease was up, he would have wound up paying a buttload more to keep it. Honestly, who wants a car that's not truly theirs?

Oh, and yes, he totalled it.
why did they have to re mortgage the house if the kid leased it? I dont get it

From my understanding he was making peanuts at his current job and being 18 there was no way he could afford monthly payments and insurance. Never really asked about the details, but I remember him saying that.

I change cars like underwear. Ive leased every car Ive ever owned, and I have never cried because Im 10k upside down. My current lease is a 2008 volvo c30, loaded to the gills at 35k. it costs me 600 a month with nothing down. Thats perfect for me, might be expensive for some.
at the end of my lease im going to have a buying option of about 16k.

I vote for leasing any day of the week, but thats just me. If I ever get bored, its just a matter of waiting out the short lease, and throwing that ****er back, no worries. Nothing about a lease compares to being upside down on a finance for me. If I like any one of my leases that much, I'll buy it out, but I would rather have a 2008 model in 2008, than own a 2003 in 2008, which is technically when you would own it, for the typical financier.

Yes, just about. Well in my case anyway. The difference would be like 30-40 dollars
