I test drove the X today
Every review is going to be biased based on whether you liked the car or not. This guy didn't...big deal. My review would have been the opposite because I thought it was far superior.
I still have my 05 VIII and I have gone back and forth just to compare. There's a couple points you make that are completely confusing to me.
Being VERY Slow - Sure the car feels slow if you are used to driving a modded EVO. And no it won't be as quick as a IX RS...get over it. Being a couple tenths slow doesn't make it a VERY slow POS. FWIW my car felt like a slug off the lot, and now after 500 miles it has come alive a little. I have done some pulls with a couple stock EVO8s and they are equal. The X's power comes in a little earlier...or maybe that is gearing...and then we could hold hands up to 100mph. I think it is a tick slower purely due to weight and a very good driver will see 13.4-13.5 in this car, and most people will run slower...but keep in mind that not every driver here ran 12.8s - 13.0 in their stock IXs. I see way more of them out at the track running 13.8-14.1 then I seen running lower 13s.
Small gauges - Are you sure about that? I can see these 10x easier than my VIII. Especially at night...the illumination is bright and easily deciphered compared to the older car.
Cheap interior - Maybe God himself came down and blessed your IX, but this car isn't even in the same league quality wise. I am completely confused with this statement as everyone that has been in the car comments on how much nicer and refined the interior is. My dad is a BMW fanatic and while he loves my VIII, he could never own one because it was too rough around the edges for him....but he will be picking up his MR as soon as it hits lots. He says it feels equally refined to his BMW and the suspension and driveline feels more sophisticated.
Handling and braking - I already put this to the test vs the old chassis. I don't know if one is SO much better than the other...aside from the X being able to keep more rubber on the ground due to the stiffer chassis and less body roll...but driven on the same road...my VIII requires more driver input in order to make the car rotate properly. In my X I can just point where I want to go and the car rotates perfectly, but then is caught by the AYC. Good luck keeping up with an X in braking zones. We had similar experiences as Robi and lost the brakes on the VIII and stuck it in the mud...the X brakes never skipped a beat and had zero fade all day.
Anyway. I appreciate your review and understand 1st impressions. I gain more respect for the X the more I drive it...and especially when I get back in my old car. They are just different...but this still feels like an EVO.
The important thing is that Mitsu kept up with the Jones' and kicked Subaru's ***!!!!...yet again

the little button on the door handle is the outside lock so you dont have to reach in your pocket to lock the car when you get out. I really like this since you just push it when you close the door and not hunt your remote, Just different. Maybe the auto lock feature when you walk away from you car would be cool . Your points are well noted but I think you are missing the point. This was not supposed to be the EVO IX only better . This is the New EVO X . Quieter, smoother, better handling, more refined to mimic the higher cost BMW, Lexus, sport crowd, hence the price jump from Mistu. I think the car is as fast as the VIII stock without the Turbo lag. Its not as fast as the XI stock. I dont think the they were shooting for the GO fast crowd like they did before. Believe me I like the Go fast crowd cars but at 48,000 for the BMW 335xi this is more car than I like to leave parked at walmart for an hour while I shop. I think everyone here understands the power issue will be made with simole bolt on mods and a tune. wait 2 months then drive you friends EVO X with mods and see what you think. just my .02 .

But back to the point at hand, the car should feel more grown up and not as raw. Dont get me wrong, I love the rawness but then again, I'm a 23 year old male. the rawness of the car was too much for most people over 30. Not to say anything bad about people that age but for the price people at that age werent buying the car.
Now before everyone flips out at the price, the 335XI is not comparable in price model wise. A loaded 335xi is over 50k, the base model is like 43k. thats without even a sport package. If you want a 335xi in manual, 75% has the sport package and thats like 46-47k. Add navi, Ipod, tech or whatever and its over 50k. Corvettes, same deal.
With honda accords hitting 37-39k I dont think the car is that unreasonably priced. The car is gonna sell to young guys AND older people now
I think it's a bit unfair to criticize the OP based on his stated bias -- very few people come into a showroom with an absolute clean slate, there are always preconceptions of the car you're about to test drive, and your standards of speed and handling are largely based on your previous car. Coming from an IS300, the IX felt like an absolute rocket.
When I eventually get around to test driving the X, having this review in mind will probably be healthy to offset the uniformly glowing reviews the X has received in the press. The standards of those frequenting this board are probably quite different than the authors of the magazine reviews who by design must filter their opinions somewhat to cater to their readership, which is as broad as Mitsu's marketing target for the X. Who knows, with the OP's review in mind, I may be pleasantly surprised if the steering feels quicker and the acceleration faster that the OP described.
I thought the review was very helpful. The only limitation it may have is the difficulty of fully appreciating the X's handling capabilities because of the 'rules' of a typical test drive. The OP seemed to stretch those rules a bit though, so maybe it's more accurate that you'd think.

As others have said, the car needs a break-in time. You can't expect to dog a car out that has 25 miles on it.
Most car magazines have been pulling 4.6-4.9 0-60 times for the EVO X. Not too shabby for an AWD car priced int the mid 30's.
There's plenty of market for this car.

i dont think is a plenty of market for it. Everywhere the evos are sold big, are the rally country's. since its no real history behind the evo here ,it is harder to sell it.
And where is the rally keep going on, they dont care navigation in the car. Matter a fact, is more base modell variation there then upscale one... What do you think why is that? Because they looking for a DD.?

Engrish please?
The steering is less darty and more controlled. If anything when you take a HARD dive into a corner, the car goes right where you want it to without having to "toss" the weight of the car in order to avoid understeer, like in the old chassis. Superior results, less driver input.

I'm leaving, this is geting old. It's a bunch of people who love their 9's and don't like the changes made to the X. Fine, don't buy one then and just stfu. There, isn't that much easier. God, I get so tired of typing pointless posts like the one I am now. It's such a waste of time because this disussion is so meaningless.

I don't think anyone is foolish enough to think that the car can't be made fast. Every car can be made fast.
I think some of the concerns is the fact that you spend $40k on a car and drive it off the lot knowing full well that you aren't happy with the performance and you are forced to modify the stock car which will cost at least another 2k. On top of that - with the mods - you risk voiding your warranty when you've got 5 or so years left to pay it off. I'm glad that nothing serious went wrong when I was paying my car off or I would've been stuck between a rock and a hard place financially.

I am sorry , who out there didnt MOD their EVO, shame on you. 40K, did you think this was all for engine mods. the car is fully loaded with extra options. 34K if you want a strip down version to race. Really guys this is not so hard to understand. Mitsu now offers creature comforts you couldnt get before. this car is made for MODS, thats why we buy it. what do you think it would cost if they gave us the EVO X with 350 rwhp off the show room floor. I like the idea of quick car but PSSSS come over hear if you bolt this on, tune this up, tweak this you get and extra 100hp( sweet). the US gov. / insurance is not in my way. if you cannot afford this car then oh well. we all know if you heavily mod your car and it blows you will be stuck . this rule has alway exsisted and we still mod our cars.
I have test driven the Bmw 335I its nice inside , quieter, feels even heavier than the X. Its not faster I promise you , and cost 8 grand more out the door. Even the 335I guys are modding there Bimmers for more power.
