test drove an evo x - questions about engine?

I test drove an evo x after test driving an 08 STI and found out I like the evo x a lot more than I thought I would have. It felt more torque-er than the sti, i thought it looked better than the 08 sti and i thought it was more comfy than the 08 sti.

Im just wondering about the engine and the limits of the new aluminum block engine. I feel mitsu dropped the one clear and definite advantage that the evo had over the sti - the 4g63. The 4g63 has been a proven engine since 1989. People are reaching 10s on a fully stock motor with a GT35R - never have I seen an STI come close.

Im the type of person who likes to mod their car and I know that aluminum isnt the best choice for longivity with forced induction... but I guess they had to do it do lighten the car up a little bit.

Where does all that extra weight come from anyways? 3500 lbs!!!

It's like I wanted to get the car but my intuition is stopping me.

we dont know how reilable the new engine yet, wich is obvius why .
We know the new engine makes more power then the 4g63T for mods to mods with basic bolts on with no tune!
I wouldn't worry about the weight since the X handels better then the IX.
So thats all for now.

Unless you're dead-set on getting over 500whp, I think you'll be fine. Simple bolt-ons and tuning have already made significant power gains on the X - more than comparably modded IX's.

The extra weight comes from a variety of things, including, but not limited to: additional safety equipment, stiffer chassis, SAWC components. Despite the weight penalty, the X handles better ... although it no longer feels like an overgrown go-cart.

It sounds like you've removed the '08 STI from consideration based on your test drive. Now all you have to do choose between a new X and a clean used IX. From where I am standing, you really can't go wrong with either Evo. Both are phenomenal cars. Good luck!

I feel the 4B11 will still have a large after market for performance parts, but will be severely limited by the aluminium block. 350-400 WHP should be possible on stock turbo, but we don't know yet. I doubt 600 WHP GT35R setups will be safe with the new engine without serious work.

The extra weight is from the new frame I believe. Supposed to be sturdier?

Sounds too soon to say, but I'm actually interested in seeing what the XI will be like.

I think one can conclude that Evo X won't be as good of a drag racer compared to the 9.

I would be more worried about the factory tune (for 07+ emissions reasons) than anything... did anybody else see how bad the 07 sti's totally fried their motors, most completely stock due to the new factory tuning (absolutely nothing changed with the shortblock). As for 08 sti's we will see... So far it looks like AMS doesnt have any complaints about the factory tune, unless i missed something... But for the 4b11, I'll bet money that it will take UP TO 450~500 whp area on the stock block, with a good tuner thats not too boost happy. The subies stock aluminum block will do around 450whp on 30r setup at like 24psi, with a good subaru tuner, given it is a 2.5L.... so one would say... if the subaru can do it, the evo should do it better right?! lol
