Evo (CZ4A) versus STI (GR) mega merge thread
All things being equal, I'd buy the STi, as well. Unfortunately, all things aren't equal and the STi's motor is presenting some issues. To be perfectly honest, neither car is terribly appealing. If i were shopping for a new sporting car right now, I'd be considering the 370z, a MCS, a GTI, a Mustang....
2011 Mustangs are very nice. Too bad they're uglier than ****. I mean seriously, I cannot think of any car made that has more wheel gap and such unsightly proportions - the area above the rear wheel arches is unacceptable.
GTI? Spent a lot of time behind the wheel of this one w/ DSG. Very polished. Very boring.
If Mitsubishi would get off their *** and put a 6 speed MANUAL in the GSR there wouldn't be half as many people contemplating the STi. It's the only reason the STi is still checked in my "possibly maybe" cars-to-buy book.
BTW - it makes me feel good to know I'm not the only 335i owner who might be "stepping down" into an Evo.
IMO, I would actually get the new WRX instead of the STI. You can get the flared fenders on the REX for next year, it is faster than the STI, the diffs really don't matter for most on the street and you will save 10K to use for better shocks, wheels and rubber. Just a thought.
That said, I still see more STI's on the road compared to the X. Maybe see one X on the road around here every 4-5 months. STI's monthly.

In Colorado, everyone and their hippie parents drive a Subaru. It's what keeps me from buying one. There's nothing unique about them, at all. I see the STi EVERYWHERE, and every time I do I'm reminded how seriously ugly that hatchback is.
The trunk may be small, but I've found it's more than sufficient for everything. Including a ton of groceries. Or 2 golf club bags. It just doesn't fit really large items. For that, I have a truck, so I don't really care. I don't put much in the trunk anyway, because it just shifts around too much. It's better on the floor in the back seat.
I like having a car that I don't see on every other street corner.

WRX or Sti switch to Evo X
I currently have an 09 WRX w/ some stage 2 parts (spt catback, invidia catless dp, perrin cold air, hks ssqv, and a custom tune). I ran a 13.2 w/ a lousey 60ft, and feel with a better launch I could've hit 12.9 for sure. However, while I know it IS fast, it just doesn't FEEL fast. Spool seems to take its sweet time and it just doesn't have the pin you to your seat w/ torque that I think a turbo motor should have.
So, as I am currently unhappy with it, I am looking to trade it in for either an '11 Sti sedan or a '10 Evo X. I'm definitely leaning towards the X though, since I test drove both an X and a '10 Sti hatch.
I'd love to hear if any of you have been in my situation or have traded over from an Sti. Spool, mods, and torque feeling comparisons would be excellent.
Thanks!

I was kinda stuck in the same boat. I had an 02 wrx, and wanted to switch to either a new sti or evo x.I'll definately say this. The STI to me seemed a bit faster on start due to the 2.5 engine.
But as far as I know, evo will be making better numbers with the same bolt ons.
I purchased an evo x and love it. The only thing I miss about my wrx now is the boxer rumble, haha.

Don't be so anxious there. Wait for the 2011 STi sedan which is due out in a couple of months. Test drive that first before getting into a X. Who knows you might have an epiphany.
I test drove a 2010 Sti SE which is very similar to the '11s. All they did was make suspension tweaks... and even still, its not the same as driving a modded and tuned version, which is why I am asking here for peoples experiences
Jesus. Trust me, drive some of those cars before you say such things. The Nissan 370Z is so full of fail it's hilarious. If you want a 2 seater RWD car get a Corvette. It will rape that Nissan trash up and down the block all day long.

Have you driven any of these cars, it just seems like you are giving a subjective view. If you have driven them can you tell us how they drive. How is a Z a fail? Its more aggressive than a Z4, TT, Cayman for far less the price, obviously its no corvette. A corvette still costs more. Have you driven the new 5.0? You 335i guys think every car is a "step down". Im also on bimmerpost because Im also interested in the new 1M or even a 135i. Never have I seen a forum proclaim that their 335i is better than their flagship (M3). Seriously get off your high horse, a 335i is a plain jane car that any middle aged woman can drive.
I've driven most if not all of these cars. No, I have not driven a 5.0 although I'm probably going to check one out this weekend for the hell of it. Who knows, I could be surprised? I just don't think I could get over their looks.
In the past 2-3 months I have driven the following cars either as test-drives or friends' cars:
E92 335i (my car, just sold)
Mazdaspeed6
E92 M3
2011 335iS w/ DCT
2010 M3 w 6spd
2010 M3 w/ DCT
'07 Corvette Z06
'08 Corvette Z06 (actually bought, had 1 day, returned to Carmax for bad tranny)
'10 Corvette Grand Sport
'08 Cayman S
I can tell you why the 370Z is a piece of ****: I owned a 350Z for exactly 1 year. The 370 solves none of the real issues that the 350 had - terrible visibility, junk suspension, garbage VQ engine. For $5000 more you can get a brand new Corvette LT1 - a car that is much better looking and has an engine that is simply to die for. It will beat a 370Z around a track going in reverse. A 370 is a ***** car and/or SoCali car for men who wear designer sunglasses.
335i may be "plain jane" but it has a better motor in it than the one in the M3, which is the car I had planned on buying. If they could take the 335i N54 motor and put it into an M3 then I'd buy one...(and this is what BMW is doing btw...a turbo 6 is confirmed for the next M3). The V8 in the current M3 is a terrible motor - bad gas mileage, no torque, no modability. There are TONS of 335i owners on bimmerpost who DO look down upon the M3. Obviously the M3 is the better car, but the 335i is simply the better value and DOES have a better engine.
I have no high horse, if I thought the 335 was the bee's knees I wouldn't have sold it now would I?
No need to be so formal. Please feel free to call me by my username.
To say what things? The cars I'd consider? Forgive me for not consulting you to check my options.
I hated the Corvette's steering. Next.
I care about wheel gap like I care about getting a third nostril. Any other riveting pointers?
...I wouldn't even look at an automatic anything.
Evo owners don't seem to count the number of gears as a point of superiority. YMMV.

The only reason the N54 was "good" is because it has a lot of displacement (compared to an Evo). I've had two of them, and there is a lot of crummy points involved. Direct injection limitations, throttle plate closure, the fact its not really a performance engine since its terribly undersquare, not designed for high RPM, tiny turbos in an integrated manifold with rattling wastegates, a HORRIBLE fuel pump design that makes the car almost not worth owning... I could go on. I would never look down on an M3, because it has a proper differential, infinitely better driving dynamics, an engine that won't leave you stranded in limp mode with a dead fuel pump, and a much nicer interior. A 135i/335i is a Texas highway roller car. It will never have the track star potential of an M3 or even an Evo. While the 335i is probably one of the best commuters out there, it falls down as a true enthusiast's car. M3 >>>>>> 335i. Show me one of those guys on E90post that would really rather have a 335i over an M3. If he does, he's a street racer. You can bet your Roundel that the M3 turbo motor won't be an undersquare tarted up commuter engine like the N54 was.
