To buy or not to buy....

Hello everyone,

I am new to this site but I have been a long believer in the Evo and have wanted one ever since I first put my hands on a steering wheel. My first car I ever drove was an '88' Honda accord carborator engin that I kept alive till 220k miles. I am curently driving a '91' Toyota Camry stick.

As you can see they aren't the best of cars performance wise. This summer I am graduating college and I already have a real job lined up which is putting the reality of owning an Evo in grasp. My question to everyone out there is does it live up to the hype? Gas is not going down anytime soon and is all of that work to the car really worth it?

I am very excited to get into an Evo for the first time hopefully soon. Any say either way is going to have a lot of effect on my choice coming from other fellow Evo lovers. Let me know what you think.

Well when you buy a Evo you dont worry about the gas lol. There made for performance and speed. But driven carefully you can get about 27mpg highway. The car is awesome and if you can afforded then I highly recommend you buy one asap. The Evo X lives up to its name. And with like 4000 dollars put into the car you can have about 370awhp easly.

I know it sounds like I have already made up my mind... but I just cannot shake the fact that I will be spending so much on gas. Is the performance really worth it? Can an amature still get the car to drift without worry? I wanted to get the car for the performance and handling we all know it has. I am just worried that in the end after the gas/dyno runs/tune ups is this evo X still the one to get?

Carefully driven and out of boost people are reporting highway gas mileage in the middle to upper 20's. It isnt THAT bad with gas.

I'd say buy some sort of car that is very inexpensive to maintain and has alot of aftermarket available for it, and learn how to really drive a car. Or build yourself a nice respectable street car (240sx,miata,Honda's, E36 M3, older impreza and swap an sti engine) what do you want out of the car? looks? drag? auto X? road course? Thing's aren't cheap and go bad on this car depending on the way you treat it (or for no reason at all ). for example the Clutch, Transfer Case, Tires, brake pads, rotors, Synthetic Oil, Power Mods. This car can become very expensive, In no time at all. Also, gas isn't that good on the Evo at all. Save your money would be my best advice for you and look into the aforementioned platforms above. Or maybe some sort of other car you like, and that has a good after market readily available.

I graduated college last year, bought this car after I had been in my new job for 2months. I have absolutelly zero regrets. Well, I have 1... that I'm not driving it right now.

If you're drift happy, I'd suggest building a 240sx or finding yoruself (yeah right) a AE86 Corolla. Can you drift an Evo? Yes, you can. i have been known to do that. But I've also been labeled as insane by many. The Evo is an AWD grip monster. If you get the X, I believe the S-AYC will be able to tell whether you want to drift it or not and help you accomplish your goal. X drivers, feel free to chime in on that one. My IX will 'drift' if I take her to the edge of sanity, slap sanity in the face, and keep going FWIW the Evo is one of the most fun cars you can possibly get out there. I'd HIGHLY suggest you get into some events. It's not warranty friendly, but it's fun as **** and you get to really enjoy your car. Start off with SCCA Solo as it has the least (pretty much zero) chance of car damage. Then you can move to Road Course and if you got *****.... RALLY CROSS!!! **** YEAH!!! My opinion, find yourself a good deal on a new GSR Evo X. Manual FTW!!! Just remember to get good gauges. The GSR doesn't have any stock.

I've wanted an EVo since I was 16 and wasn't able to get one until the new X's came out. I immediately bought it and haven't regret it since. All previous cars I had were non-turbo, non-rally, 6-speed - so the evo was a whole new machine, but I think if you're experienced enough with cars and manual tranny in general than you can pick it up quick. Best treat it like a child though.
