Smell???

I keep getting a distinct smell from time to time, I notice it more so when I wind the gears out and the turbo kicks in. I'm at 250 miles and it smells like clutch or brake pad? I was told it could be the converter? Any ideas?

It is the clutch and it will go away soon. Mine did the same thing and was completely gone by 1000 miles. Welcome to the EVO...the clutch gobbler.

Normal just things breaking in. Probably, mostly the brakes. I had the same thing happen.

I would say the clutch as well. You will smell it again when you are racing it.

Yeah it had me a little worried, I was hoping this was something of the norm. I just felt the need to ask since this is my first EVO.

So are you guys actually launching it? Can we even launch and have a clutch to get to work/school the next day?

My car never made that smell. But the test drive car (which the sales guy and I really went to town on) started making a burning smell and the cabin was actually filled with smoke by the time we got back to teh dealership. lol.

Its definitely the clutch. Mine was awful for the first couple of weeks (bear in mind I drove nearly 2500 miles in the first 3 days). I have never lauched it or anything. It just smelled awful at wide open throttle anytime I got on it.

The good news is that it will get much better soon. Just let it break in nicely and you'll be golden.

Same here. I was wondering if the time came to it if I should/could. Last car I beat on the clutch and nothing happened to it but my last car had much less power/torque and was FWD.

Actually...it's not the clutch. They spray an under coat on the car to protect the underside during shipping. The reason why there is so much smoke is that it is burning off the bottom side of the engine. I have about 980 miles and it still kinda lingers sometimes.

I'd be absolutely worried if the clutch was stinking up the place THAT bad.

I've launched a few times. If you haven't you should. It's awesome. Clutch still fine and I didn't even smell it after launching.

Mine was definitely the clutch. It only happened when I pulled up a hill from about 1500rpm, went wide open throttle through first and second with no clutch slip, or pulled the car onto the dyno. Smells like clutch, smells when it should be clutch, IS clutch.

Try adjusting your clutch pedal. It may be releasing way too early.

Wow, I didn't have that...that I know of. Mine was definitely something burning off the underside of the engine...but it didn't have that clutch smell . I noticed it the most when I test drove the car, popped the hood after driving 3 miles on mostly level streets and the whole engine bay was putting out white smoke.
