Has anyone figured out a roof rack for the X?

Hi Guys,

I need to put a roof rack on my new Evo X, and thought that I'd see if anyone else has done it yet. Mitsubishi sells one in Japan that is obviously just a Thule, but Thule doesn't list a fitment for the X or current Lancers yet. Neither does Yakima.

Since the one from Japan is a Thule, I guess that worst case I'll have to go to a local bike shop and get them to let me try out all of the clips until I find the right one unless someone has done that already. Anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks,

--Josh

Best thing to do is email or call Yakima or Thule.

Good idea. I'll give Thule a call and see if they know anything. They obviously figured it out for Mitsu Japan, but I'd think that the odds of the average customer service rep having access to the info are low. Still, worth a try.

The Evo 8 and the Lancer RA use the same Thule clips...I work at a bicycle shop....so I will try to check tomorrow the roof of a regular 2008 Lancer and the Evo X to see if they use the same roof hard points as the previous generation of the Lancers.

Cool, thanks. If you can figure it out I'll just order them from you, if your shop can do that.

Yeah, that is the one from Japan that appears to just be a standard Thule rack. I have a complete Thule setup already, so I just need to figure out which clips are needed for the X. With shipping that would be over $400 for a rack that costs under $200 here, and I only need $20 worth of the parts. Thanks for looking for it though.

I have excactly the same issue, as I bike and windsurf. I need a rack for my car and that is holding me from buying the X... I have an MR on order so it gives me time to figure it out. I already checked with Thule and Yakima and the don't have a fit now... They don't know when it will be availble either. I was wondering where did you saw the Thule fit for the X in Japan? I would be ready to order clips (I also have the complete rack..) from them.

I don't have any official info, but JapanParts has a listing for a rack system from MItsu in Japan here (top entry): http://www.japanparts.com/db/partsli...dle=2&small=35 From what I can see that is a normal Thule with the square bars. They only sell it as a complete setup, and coming from Japan it would be about twice as expensive as it should be here in the US.

I have some of the parts too, so I ordered the rest and am going to go to my local bike shop and try out the various clips until I find a set that fits right. ThyPunko_PR said above that he'll check a few things out as well, so I'm sure that we should be able to find the right clips that they're using. I also noticed in the door frames of my car that there is a mark in each that is in the same place as the rack position in that pic, so they appear to be the rack location markings. I'll be sure to post a thread when I find something that works. It should be the end of the week or so.

I currently own a 2006 wrx wagon and i have been rocking the thule rack system and personally was not a fan. the system i was running was a set of the Thule Rapid Crossroads with the 43 Inch Rapid Load Bars. Never seemed to quite fit the car the way I wanted. Plus I ran the Thule Sidearm bike rack system and it is supposed to be there most durable system for serious mountain bikes and it lacked major support from swaying. I just sold the whole system with the intention of trading my wrx in for a Evo X MR and buying the Yakima system when its released. from what i have seen I feel like Yakima builds a better system. I will def be pretty bummed when i get the car and theres still no system released by yakima. Theres def no room in the trunk for a bike

That's interesting. I own both Yakima and Thule systems and I've always liked the Thule systems better. I always use fork-mount bike attachments though. Their new Peloton rack is awesome as it doesn't simply use a skewer, it uses a clamp system built into the head of the tray. The newer style Yakima Q-towers are nice though.

The Subaru rack for the new STI's used the Thule aero bars and I like them, but I decided to stick with their normal system for the Evo since that's what Mitsu is using over in Japan.

FWIW, you can mix and match base systems and bike attachments between Yakima and Thule nowadays, so if you find a base form one and an attachment from the other that you prefer you should be able to make it work.

EDIT: If you are keeping your WRX and might want to put a rack on it again you should check out this thread: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=882744 I did that for my '07 STI and it was great - MUCH nicer than the normal way. It looks like the pics from the original post are gone now, but there are a bunch of pics from others throughout the thread.
