Does dealer access ECU for oil changes?

Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone knows if Mitsu dealers access the ECU for any reason in conjunction with an oil change. I have the Ecutek flash and am not crazy about getting black listed for the flash. Thanks.

Mine doesn't, but I'm typically shooting the breeze with the tech anyway (hint: make friends with the techs).

I'm pretty sure your already screwed

they WILL check when you come in for waranty work. its not like you can "un do" the flash.

If I know I have a major/expensive warranty issue, I might consider preparing for that by swapping to a stock ecu.

Which brings up an interesting question - do they know which ECU was in which car? Engines, tranny's, etc. all have serial numbers tied to the VIN, why wouldn't an ECU?

Guys, no dealership is going to check the ECU unless there is some serious amount of warranty work needed to be done. If your motor has blown, then obviously they're going to check, but if you're going in for a oil change you'll be fine. I have a built motor, just about every mod you can think of and I still have my warranty. I don't know why so many people worry... and I have gone to 2 different mitsu dealerships in 2 different cities for my oil changes.

thats a good question, a better one is, CAN you switch ECU with out some manipulation to bypass lockouts/security features. I don't think it would be as simple as changing tires, but I'm not sure...

anyone have insight on this?

Info

This has been discussed in a few different threads recently; if you poke around you should find them.

Also, here's some info the from WORKS website:

Can the WORKS P2 be detected by the dealer?
The WORKS Brain Flash was developed to be an inconspicuous component integrated into your vehicle noticeable only by the improved performance once you depress the accelerator. The ECU is your factory original and we include a boost hose assembly that is visually identical to stock. From an appearance perspective, it is invisible. In order to confirm the software changes, the dealer would have to have a good reason to detect any software changes because the time, the energy and the equipment to detect a flash is very daunting and cumbersome. In fact, most dealerships lack the technical know-how even though it is possible but very improbable. In addition, there’s little reason to even deal with the ECU since WORKS engineers program the software meticulously to run seamlessly with the original factory parameters. Those that have had dealer re-flashes (such as the P0300 misfire) with the WORKS Brain Flash go through without question and WORKS has always integrated the new Mitsubishi software versions with all the Brain Flash versions. In theory, the flash could be detected, but in reality, there’s no reason it would be. *Side note, be forewarned that some ECU flashes will prevent the dealer from recognizing the stock ECU is even present. The WORKS Brain Flashes are all compliant with Mitsubishi diagnostic equipment and WILL allow the dealer to perform re-flash updates as necessary.

Read the above. And in my personal experience the dealer wouldn't go near the ecu even when I asked them (I wanted to know if the car already had the Re-flash). While your dealer may be eager to nullify your warranty, they're also interested in doing the least amount of work possible.

And you CAN "un do" the flash.

Why go to the dealer for oil changes in the first place?

Free ones? I don't think so, it was probably included in your OTD price. Nothing is free, not even BMW's so called free maintenance.

I don't think you can switch ECUs without doing some reprogramming. ECUs are tied to the immobilizer, so if you just switch ECUs your car won't run at all.
